Topps Tigers: Kaline’s single. Gibby’s homer. Verlander’s no-hitter.
Every Tigers moment from 1952 to today.

Topps is engaging in a special one-day promotion TODAY asking the Detroit faithful to share their favorite Tigers memories using the Topps Pennant app and the #tigermemories hashtag on Twitter. A few lucky participating fans will have the opportunity to win fun Tigers collectibles including old Topps cards and contracts of your favorite Tigers of the 1980s, some of which came directly from an avid Tigers fan and Topps Pennant team member’s personal collection.

May 8 in Tigers history:

1901: May 8, 1901, Norman “Turkey” Stearnes is born in Nashville, Tennessee. Stearnes will become the greatest player in Detroit’s negro leagues, starring for the Detroit Stars from 1923 to 1931. He led the negro leagues in home runs six times and was one of the greatest outfielders of his era.

1927: At Detroit, Marty McManus singles in two runs in the 9th to lead the Tigers to a 3 - 2 win over the Red Sox. Fats Fothergill goes hitless for the first time this season to end his 18-game hitting streak.

1946: At Griffith Stadium, Detroit 2B Eddie Mayo snags a 3rd-inning liner off the bat of Gil Torres to start a triple play. The ball is deflected by P Hal Newhouser, but Mayo grabs it before it hits the ground. It is the second time in a year that Mayo has started a triple play off Torres: in the 2nd inning of the nitecap on July 20, 1945, Mayo grabbed a Torres line drive to start the triple play.
