Valverde sidelined with sprained wrist
Jose Valverde (RHP, DET) injured his right wrist while warming up on Tuesday night, and Phil Coke (LHP, jDET) got a save in his absence. The injury was diagnosed as a sprain on Wednesday, and Valverde is expected to be sidelined only 3-4 days. While he's out, Joaquin Benoit (RHP, DET) figures to get any save opportunities.
Benoit has been sensational this season, with a 1.99 ERA, 12.5 Dom, 3.4 Cmd, and a 142 BPV. In fact, this is the fourth season in the past five when Benoit has posted a closer-worthy BPV. He struggled with his control in 2008, but he's been lights out ever since.
Coke has been excellent as well, but a couple of things auger against his getting save chances outside of specific situations. First, he's a lefty who has had some struggles against right-handed hitters. From 2009-2011, right-handed batters hit .288 against him, as opposed to a .225 BA by lefties, and this season right-handers are hitting .327 against him. Second, he doesn't have Benoit's track record. Last season, his BPV was 34, largely because of command issues.
