Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Leyland on whether Castellanos could contribute in 2012: "I have no idea. That would be probably a surprise to me. That’s an awful big jump, particularly now that he’s playing the outfield".
Leyland on Castellanos: "He’s one of those special guys. I wouldn’t put anything past him. Right now, that would be on the back burner for me".
Leyland re: Castellanos in OF: "I think it’s unfair to the kid ... it’s unfair to instructors, everybody else — to say after 3 or 4 days, How much can you tell in three or four days"?

Detroit Tigers' Brayan Villarreal visits neck specialist, says he'll be available Tuesday.
from Mlive

Neck tightness keeps Villarreal out of action.
Tigers reliever Brayan Villarreal hopes he'll be back in the coming days after missing his fourth consecutive game out of the All-Star break. However, his neck tightness has become enough of a concern that he spent Monday afternoon visiting a specialist.
No results were immediately available. Regardless, manager Jim Leyland isn't hiding his worry.
Villarreal told reporters Monday his neck cramped up while sleeping. He felt it on Friday in Baltimore, and it left him unable to turn his head as he normally would.
Villarreal is the one reliever who did not pitch in Saturday's 13-inning loss to the Orioles. In fact, he never warmed up.

Tigers to honor Carlos Guillen in pregame ceremony.
The Tigers gave Magglio Ordonez the proper recognition upon his retirement last month. Next homestand, it will be Carlos Guillen's turn.

The Tigers announced Monday they will honor their former All-Star shortstop in a pregame ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 4. It will be part of their annual Fiesta Tigres celebration, which recognizes and honors the contributions of Hispanic and Latino players to the sport.

Guillen will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. He'll also be inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame.

The question of honoring Guillen came up when the Tigers brought back Ordonez to officially announce his retirement in a pregame ceremony. Guillen, after all, was one of the first acquisitions in the Tigers' turnaround from 119 losses in 2003 to a World Series appearance three years later.

Detroit's acquisition of Guillen from Seattle after the 2003 season ended up as arguably the best trade of Dave Dombrowski's tenure as Tigers president/general manager. Guillen earned three All-Star selections in a five-year stretch and put up three consecutive seasons with a .318 average or better. He fell a home run shy of a 20-homer, 20-steal season in 2006 to go with a .320 average, helping fuel Detroit's offense to its best season since 1984.

Injuries wore down Guillen from 2008 on, but he still had his stretches. He was an underrated hitter down the stretch on the 2009 team that lost the division in a tiebreaker, while his home run off Jered Weaver last July at Comerica Park provided one of the most memorable shots of Detroit's division drive.

Jackson scores run in 13th straight game.
Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker and Chet Lemon never did it. Neither did Ron LeFlore during his heyday with the Tigers. The way Austin Jackson is going, his streak of consecutive games with a run scored is approaching record territory.

Not since Johnny Groth 61 years ago has a Tigers player scored a run in 13 straight games until Jackson continued his streak by reaching on an error and scoring on a Miguel Cabrera groundout in the first inning of Monday's series opener against the Angels.

According to baseball-reference.com, whose records go back to 1918, Doc Cramer holds the longest streak by a Tigers player in that stretch, scoring a run in 16 consecutive games from Aug. 30 to Sept. 17, 1944. Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg had a 15-game streak in 1940. Charlie Gehringer, Pete Fox and Al Wingo had 14-game streaks.

Jackson entered Monday batting .321 (17-for-53) over the course of the streak.

Tigers have optioned Luis Marte to Toledo following tonight's game. Jacob Turner will be recalled on Tuesday.

Tigers‬ make it 8 wins in 9G, come from behind to beat Angels, 8-6. Berry (literally) steals the show - 2 hits to start rallies, 2SB, 2R+RBI.

Thanks to 2 unearned runs, ‪Tigers‬ had 2-1 lead going to 5th - & Porcello looked sharp. Then Angels hit ball hard, scored 4R in 5th, led 5-2.

Then Berry took charge: bunt single w/ 2 outs touched off 2-run 5th, w/ RBI singles from Fielder and Young...‪Tigers‬ trailed, 5-4.

Tigers‬ were still down, 5-4, when Berry led off 7th with single, stole 2nd, stole 3rd, and scored on Young Sac fly, tying game at 5.

Boesch followed with a bomb of a 2-run HR - deep to RF - and ‪Tigers‬ had 7-5 lead. After Trumbo HR'd, Berry singled home final run in 8th.

Tigers‬ 5-9 hitters showing signs of life..last 10G: .304 (194AB), 59H+16BB, 32RBI, 28R...it's changed the look of this lineup....

Boesch 6-16 since break, 2 dbl, HR and 5RBI. Young finished 2-4 tonite w/ 2RBI. Berry was 3-5, RBI, 2SB and 2R. Now hitting .297 in 165AB.

Porcello's final line: 5.2IP, 8H, 5ER, 3BB/5K...showed exc. fastball and changeup at times - but got burned by pitches up in strike zone in 4R 5th.

Dotel got 3rd win w/ 1.1IP of scoreless work. Benoit gave up HR in 8th (3rd HR in 5 batters!), Valverde closed for 17th save.

Jackson scored a run for the 13th cons. game - first ‪Tiger‬ to do that since Johnny Groth in 1950. He's scored 28R last 28G.

Tigers‬ now 2.5GB W. Sox in Central....Turner makes 2nd start of yr tom (for Smyly), Angels counter with Garret Richards...on air at 6:40pm.

July 17 in Tigers history:

1922 - At Boston, Ty Cobb gets five hits (and a walk) in a game for the 4th time this year, setting an American League mark. His previous 5-hit contests were on May 7th, July 7th, and July 12th. Only Willie Keeler has done it before. The Tigers roar, 16 - 7. overcoming a 5 - 0 deficit after one inning.

1955: Earl Torgeson of the Tigers steals home in the 10th to beat the Yankees 6 - 5.

The Tigers are telling teams that top prospect Nick Castellanos is unavailable in any trade "at least right now," according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (on Twitter).
Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports echoes that sentiment, tweeting that he'd be "very surprised" if the Tigers move Castellanos for a rental .
