Miggy sets mark for longest LCS hit streak at 16.
Miguel Cabrera put himself all alone in record territory on a pair of streaks with his third-inning walk and fifth-inning double Tuesday night in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.
For one, his 16-game hitting streak in League Championship Series, a run that dates to the Marlins' victory in the 2003 National League Championship Series over the Cubs, is now the longest in Major League history. He entered the night tied with Manny Ramirez (2003-07) and Pete Rose (1973-83), and his RBI double gave him the mark while giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Before that, his walk meant he has reached base safely in all 19 of his postseason games with the Tigers. That pushes him past Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg for the longest streak in franchise history.
Cabrera's fifth-inning double off Yankees reliever David Phelps was the seventh of his postseason career as a member of the Tigers, tying him with Greenberg for second in franchise history. Pete Fox is the Tigers' franchise leader with nine.
The double was Cabrera's 11th career postseason extra-base hit as a member of the Tigers, which trails only Greenberg's 14 for the most in franchise history.

Leyland not ruling Valverde out of save situation
DETROIT -- The Tigers still had a bullpen by committee going into Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Tuesday night. The only difference from Sunday was that Jose Valverde was on the committee.

After Valverde spent Sunday working with pitching coach Jeff Jones on his delivery, manager Jim Leyland said it's possible Valverde could close out Game 3.
"I'm going to wait and see how things play out," Leyland said Tuesday afternoon. "It could happen. I'll wait and see how things play out, how the lineup looks, who's coming up."

Later, Leyland said he had "two or three plans in place" for how he'd go in the ninth inning. Valverde is part of at least one of those plans.
"I can tell you right now I don't have a definite closer etched in stone tonight," Leyland said.

When asked if the state of the series -- the Tigers entered Tuesday with a chance to take a 3-0 series lead if starter Justin Verlander could hold down New York -- would factor into the decision, Leyland said it would not.

Bottom line, it appears certain that at some point this postseason, Valverde will be closing again, whether full or part time. Whether he's pitching his best, if they can get him pitching effectively, that might be enough for Leyland, who wants to get his setup staff back in order rather than having to pitch a man down.

"I am a firm believer that we definitely, without question, need Jose Valverde to win. I truly believe that," Leyland said. "And I think it's also important that you're kind of making a plea to your crowd, and maybe it sounds a little selfish or whatever, but to just not have too short of memory. ...

"I know the old what-have-you-done-for-me lately stuff, but that's guy's good. And I'm just going to have to play this one with managerial instincts. I may be right, I may be wrong."

Tigers to put Series tickets on sale Wednesday
DETROIT -- As they have the past couple weeks, the Tigers are putting tickets for the next round of the postseason on sale. Unlike past weeks, the next round is the Fall Classic.
Tickets for potential Tigers home games in the World Series go on sale Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. ET. As with tickets for the other two postseason rounds, they'll be sold online at tigers.com and by phone at 866-66-TIGER.
Unlike when American League Championship Series tickets went on sale last week, it's already known what days the Tigers would be at home for the World Series. Because the National League won the All-Star Game, the NL champion has home-field advantage. The AL champion, whether it's the Tigers or Yankees, will host Games 3-5, scheduled for Saturday-Monday, Oct. 27-29.
Also unlike previous rounds, each buyer will be limited to up to four tickets for one game. If somebody wants to buy tickets to multiple games, they'll have to log in or call multiple times. The change allows as many people as possible to experience the World Series.

The run in the 9th for Yanks snapped a scoreless streak for Tigers' starters that had reached 30.1 innings, going back to gm 5 of ALDS...
 
Tigers survived (another) big scare in 9th. Omar Infante badly jammed his right thumb on Teixeira 1B. X-rays negative.
Infante said he expects he'll be able to play Wednesday. Said he was really concerned he had broken the thumb.
