Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

March 4 in Tigers and mlb history:

1884 - National League owners agree to provide two separate team benches to minimize fraternizing among opposing players during games.

1913 - The New York Yankees become the first major league team to conduct spring training outside of the United States, when they begin the spring in Bermuda, where is projected a series of exhibition games.

1984 - Two outstanding defensive players, shortstop Pee Wee Reese and catcher Rick Ferrell, are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Special Veterans Committee. Reese hit .269 in 16 seasons with the Dodgers while Ferrell batted .281 with just 28 home runs in 18 seasons for the Browns, Red Sox, and Senators.

2004: Commissioner Bud Selig announces that Major League Baseball will celebrate "Jackie Robinson Day" in every ballpark on April 15, the anniversary of the debut the first black player in major league history. Robinson's uniform number "42" was retired for all time in a ceremony at Shea Stadium in April of 1997 to mark the 50th anniversary of his achievement.

2010: Major League Baseball organizes a symposium on "Science Behind Anti-Doping" at its New York City headquarters. The meeting shares information about the latest developments in testing and involves both leading scientists and officials responsible for labor policy from the United States Olympic Committee, the NHL, the NFL, the NBA, the PGA and the NCAA, as well as the US Anti-Doping Agency, all of which are members of the "Partnership for Clean Competition". MLB President Bob DuPuy gives the keynote address. The conference puts a particular focus on developments in the detection of human growth hormone.

The division-winning Tigers, meanwhile, remain somewhat unsettled at the back end of their bullpen after deciding early on not to bring back the still-unsigned Jose Valverde to reprise his role as closer. With would-be replacement Bruce Rondon struggling early in the spring, Jason Beck of MLB.com wonders whether the young pitcher could lose his chance to finish games in Detroit this year. Following yesterday's reports of manager Jim Leyland's possible lack of confidence in Rondon, the skipper said today that "it's too early to get excited about anything," explaining that, "right now, he's throwing pretty hard, and they're hitting it pretty hard."
mlbtraderumors

Jim Leyland has seen young flame-thrower Bruce Rondon throw all of 2⅔ innings and he's apparently already calling "uncle"... or, I guess, "papa" in this case. Over the weekend the septuagenarian manager expressed a desire to bring Jose Valverde back to Detroit as a closer safety net, but indicated that money remains the main obstacle. Valverde definitely isn't a terrible closer by any means, but his precipitous drop in K rate over the last few years -- from 12.6 K/9 in '06 to 6.3 K/9 in '12 -- is surely an omen of worse things to come.
Why seemingly everyone in the Detroit press is having such misgivings about Rondon after the "smallest of sample sizes" is beyond me. The dude can be erratic at times, yes, but he brings some serious heat and is still just a babe. The idea that not only is Rondon "not ready" to close but that overpaying for Valverde is the answer is ludicrous. I really thought we were beyond this whole "closer mentality" thing.
