The Tigers? managerial search will dominate the GM?s time and will be the first order of business over the next few weeks. You have seen the list of candidates, but do they satisfy your most important qualification for the job?

Maybe not, it?s not your list.

Maybe your most important qualification for the next manager is this: No previous ties to Jim Leyland. Let?s just assume that?s the case. That?s right! Sorry!
But hey, you?re the GM and this won?t be easy for you! So, what?s the next most important qualification for manager of the Tigers?
Don?t forget to come back and check the results of the survey and include your comments that support your choice.

Outside of 'No Leyland ties,' what is your most important qualification for the next Tiger manager?

1. Major League managerial or coaching experience.

2. Minor League managerial or coaching experience.

3. Strong knowledge and background in analytics.

4. Employment background with a winning organization.

5. Not sure.

6. Other.

I voted “other” because the Tigers need a GM who will install an effective scouting and player-development structure.

Game 6 of the World Series set social media on fire. Analytics and sabermetrics and anything not related to gut instincts was called under question.
The Rays starting pitcher, Blake Snell, had shut out LA on 1 hit, had 9 K?s and no walks through 5 innings. In the 6th, he gave up the Dodgers? 2nd hit and was immediately pulled from the game by manager Kevin Cash.
It was the turning point of the game as the Dodgers had renewed life when the pitcher who had dominated them the whole game, walked off the mound after throwing less than 80 pitches.
The Dodgers scored 2 runs in the 6th and another in the 8th and won the game and the World Series. Incredible!
The obvious question, of course, is how far do you take analytics when it comes to your decision-making? At what point must you consider your instincts and ?gut feel??
Is there an analytical reference for a hot pitcher, dominating the opponent in the 6th game of the World Series, in a must-win situation? Is there a measurement for that?
You are the GM of the Tigers and are looking for a new manager. How much should analytics influence their decisions?
Please participate in the survey in order to state your case on analytics and how you want your manager to make use of it. Don?t forget to come back and check the results and include your comments that support your choice.

As GM, how much do want your manager using analytics when making decisions?
1. I don't want them using analytics at all.

2. I want my manager using analytics as much as possible.

3. It should be used in combination with instincts, gut feel and overall knowledge of the situation.

4. I just dont know.

5. Other.

Al Avila has turned the tables on us! Many of us were so fooled when the Tigers bagged a high profile and accomplished manager instead of staying close to the vest.

After checking that box, what moves would you, as the GM, consider for your 2021 roster?

Free agency is sure to be a little different this year as teams must consider the bottom line more than ever given the revenue losses during 2020. As a result, 1 to 3 year deals could be the popular path for teams looking to upgrade.
Higher profile free agents may accept shorter-term contracts when normally they would be looking for much longer term.
If you are the GM heading into 2021, what does the roster tell you about the direction you should go in free agency? What position group would you target first in free agency?

As GM, what position group would you target first in free agency?
1. Infield
2. Outfield
3. Starting pitching
4. Relief pitching
5. None - save money
6. Not sure

As GM of the Tigers, you have had a very busy off-season already. You have hired a new manager and gave him the task of hiring all of his coaches; a task that arguably makes the off-season a success already.
However, there is still much to do in preparation for a new season in 2021.
So what are your next steps? What is your top priority of things to address in the off-season?

What is your top priority of things to address in the off-season?

1. Consider trades /scan free agent market for needs all over the diamond.

2. Further discussions with Hinch about scouting and analytics departments.

3. Address hiring of new training staff with help of AJ Hinch.

4. Other.

The Tigers need help at both the pitching and catching positions. But there are only so many mid-level free agents at those positions. So, as the Tigers? GM, at which of those positions will you concentrate your efforts?

Please participate in the survey in order to state your case on your next steps for the off-season. Don?t forget to come back and check the results and include your comments that support your choice.

Considering only those 2 positions, where will you concentrate your efforts?
1. Pitching.
2. Catching.
3. Neither.
