Jim Elliott joins the Tigers after spending the seven seasons as a scout with the San Diego Padres. He also has 12 years of experience at the MLB Scouting Bureau.
Paul Mirocke spent 2017 in the Milwaukee Brewers organization; before that, he had a 26-year career at the Scouting Bureau, the final 14 as pro scouting coordinator.
The Tigers also added three analysts in its analytics department -- Danny Vargovick, Drew Jordan and Shane Piesik.
Sam Menzin has a new title to reflect his broader role. He's now director of baseball operations and professional scouting.
Putting an analytics guy in charge of scouting is definitely a 21st century move.
Finally, Jeff Wetherby has moved from major league to international scouting.
"Today's announcement is another step in the building of our infrastructure within baseball operations," Tigers general manager Al Avila said in a release. "Growth in the analytics area is key in our goal of making sound, informed baseball decisions both when evaluating players, and in providing data to the big league players, manager and his coaching staff. The additions in scouting are important for us in our search for impact type players to bring into our organization."
