Draft Trade Idea

3 was Warford, 2 was Slay last year.

This means nothing. The transition from college to pro is much easier at guard and much more difficult at CB, which is why Warford was able to contribute so much in year 1 and Slay wasn't.

Plus, we won't be taking another 3rd round guard this year. If we're able to swap 1st round picks and only give up an additional 3rd rounder in order to get Watkins or Clowney, Mayhew better get that done.

If it costs a 2nd instead of a 3rd, then I'd be hesitant for Mayhew to trade up. But losing a 3rd to trade up is totally worth it.

So no rookie CB solves any of our "problems" this year. Houston and Slay it's up to you. If we're looking at 2014 only, we need to get Watkins. Long term CB and WR in Round 1 and 2 would be good choices. But it's worth giving up the 2nd for Watkins and see how Houston/Slay can rebound.

It is unlikely that any rookie CB would be able to be a quality starter for 2014, although Gilbert would have a much better chance than Slay did because he's more talented and a better player than Slay was going into the draft. If we don't trade out of #10, I hope the Lions take Gilbert.

I'd be hesitant about giving up a 2nd rounder for Watkins. I do believe he would help us a lot immediately, but it'd be much better for the future if we took Gilbert at 10 and a WR like Jordan Matthews, Donte Moncrief, or another good WR in the 2nd round since we already have signed Golden Tate.

Ultimately, I think Gilbert+Matthews/Moncrief > Watkins

You give up a second and we get no CB until round three..and good round three CB don't happen often. Houston was not good last year, even if he improves he's going to be 30. We need a CB in those first two rounds..

I agree that a 2nd is very valuable and we should be hesitant about trading it. If we're able to give up only a 3rd in order to move up and take Watkins, I think that improves us much more for the future than taking Gilbert at 10. We could still take a CB in the 2nd round if there's one there. Otherwise I'd be ok with our secondary this year with an improved Slay and another guy stepping up, whether it be Houston or someone else. Then we could grab a CB in free agency next year to pair with Slay.

Mayhew seems happy with the CBs on the current roster , he has said numerous times he believes there are only 5 elite guys in this draft , they have not hidden their love for Watkins...hell Slick Willy Jr even showed up at Allen Park for a sit down with Watkins which is extremely odd in Lion land....Marty tried to get up and get Patrick Peterson a couple of drafts ago so he is not gun shy...and I think the 2 extra 4th round comp picks give him a couple of shots a picking up some solid depth help at both Safety and possibly Dline or even Oline.

I think it's a problem if "Marty" is happy with our CB's.

could be delusional , who knows....but its a position that the Lions were ravaged with injuries last year.

personally I have zero problem staying at 10 and getting Gilbert....the move up to get Watkins though is ballsy.

I would say if we move up to take Watkins, it will be for future picks as well. Perhaps this year's #10 overall and next year's first rounder.

We all think we'd have to give away multiple early picks to make it happen, but really two firsts should be enough to make that deal go down.

With a 50/50 bust rate among first round picks anyway, why not?

I think a 2nd and the 5th get it done along with the #10 of course.

Might be ballsy and how can you blame a GM trying to get good solid players..but imo, a WR is not what this team needs the most. And what happens if it's realized the problem lies with $tafford not the receiving core..

I still rather go defense. Just like an Ace in baseball they can stop a good offensive team.

I just don't think the trade up really works out depending on how much a team gives up. A swaps of 1sts with a 2nd and 5th would be fine. But if its next years first and this years second the price is to high. The falcons are a good example they traded a lot to move up for Jones and then were terrible all year. They sacrificed depth players and possible game changers for a 1 wr and when injuries hit this year they were pretty bad. The Skins have been trading away picks for years and have not been able to field a good team. Building through the draft is the more proven approach (if you hit on picks). This defense just is to shaky to not get some defensive playmakers.

counterpoint to my own argument is that perhaps the coaches just didn't field a good defensive scheme. Idk why but the breakdowns were abysmal and its hard to tell if thats coaching or player. So maybe Mayhew knows what he saw and thinks we are set if we change some scheme.

because at a 50/50 bust rate if you have two 1st round picks your odds say one will be a success. If you only have one your odds say that you have a 50% chance that he will be a bust.

you offer the Rams a 2nd and a 5th and a swap of 1sts , I think they jump at it in a heartbeat....2 first round picks and 2 early 2nd rounders can fix a lot of problems in St Louis.

I think we have as many holes as them. I'd like him here but that's a lot for a team who won 11 games in two years..
