Dumbass Infowars interviewer gets rekt by giggly socialist cutie

Really? You think a Walmart megastore opening in a small/midsize town didn't crush all the existing local businesses out of existence?

people across the entire country have been lamenting this for decades now.

maybe small grocery stores. But not the rest of the businesses you are talking about. There is still need for (local insurance agents, accountants, bookeepers, lawyers, printers, etc.) regardless if there is a Walmart in their town.

a need sure, but a lot less than when there were more businesses around to serve...

Walmart doesn't use local accountants, attorneys, insurance agents, etc.

they're all in a big building in Bensonville, AR.

it's a net loss for the local economy.

if small businesses are losing customers to WalMart they are doing so because they can't match or beat the prices. The people that shop there are saving money which gives them more disposable income. Maybe they use it for dining out or something else that helps other local businesses....just not the local grocery store.

Just a personal anecdote but take a drive through Fowlerville, MI and you can see local effects of a Wal Mart. The Wal Mart is right off the freeway where the local 'downtown' area is about .5 mile off the freeway. At this point the only businesses that tend to survive more than a year are eateries and your occasional niche business. You also have to consider how much traffic the town loses because people never get beyond the Wal-Mart if they're just passing through.

Off the top of my head within the last few years, the Mom and Pop grocery store, hardware store, sports/hunting store, oil change/auto shop and a clothing store went belly up. All had been there before I moved in. I never spoke to any resident in my area that didn't wish Wal Mart hadn't been built. We sold our house there but I imagine it's still more of the same.

Or hardware store...or sporting goods store...or clothing store...

Let's not pretend Wal-Mart is just another Kroger.

so everybody wishes that Walmart never showed up but they all shop there?

If they are healthy enough to bitch about the Walmart I guess the existence of the Walmart hasn't killed them.

If they don't like the Walmart they can just not go there.

You should take a break from this conversation, google "economic effects of walmart on small towns," and do some reading, and then come back to the discussion.

They can start their own clothing store, grocery store, or hardware store, and... oh wait.

Why the fuck are we talking about Walmart in this thread?

Many of them don't. A lot of people drive to Howell or Webberville if they can afford to. I think Wal Mart carries shitty products so I never shop there. I imagine someone with a bigger grudge than that would do the same.

No idea. I joined really late, I think Mack took exception to something turok said and it blew up.

I couldn't pass on an opportunity to shit on Wal Mart though. Walking into their stores makes my skin crawl. Small businesses aside they are terrible places to be. Bad layout, often dirty, bad products, even the name brand stuff is their lower end trash. And their grocery prices aren't THAT good. Any other big box retailer meets or beats them.

Fuck Wal Mart. I even prefer using a McDonald's restroom vs Wal Mart on a road trip.

I don't shop there either. A lot of what they sell is shit...but it's mostly the same shit you can buy everywhere else. My wife will grocery shop there once in a while.

Yeah, I just looked it up. Anything a person can get at the Fowlerville Walmart a person can get just about as easily somewhere else nearby.

Wasn't this post but...stopping on a road trip to use the can at a Walmart? That sounds way more involved than just going to Micky D's or somewhere else.

I also almost never shop at Walmart. It's existence doesn't make my blood boil though.

See post #56.

I googled it.

I googled "Fowlerville Grocery" then "Fowlerville Apparel" then "Fowlerville Appliances" and then "Fowlerville Hardware."

Lots of options besides Walmart.

EDIT:

Fowlerville MI Grocery Stores

Fowlerville MI Apparel

Fowlerville MI Appliances

Fowlerville MI Hardware

That's actually pretty cool, according to that search another grocery store opened a year or two after Curtis' closed. Same with another small hardware store. I hope they have better luck.

Curtis' closed?

Damn.

I used to love their pies, too.

I didn't take exception, I just corrected his obvious errors - big difference.

I avoid WalMart as well. Can't remember the last time I was in one or a Target since I got my Amazon Prime membership. But for folks like MC to say it's a net drain on a local economy because of a mother jones article that cites some economist who says it's so doesn't make it so. Small businesses may shut down but the towns don't become blighted shitholes with street after street of abandoned store fronts and houses, crack pipes and syringes littered everywhere. It's unfortunate for those business owners but consumers don't owe them a living - if they want to pay less for lower quality clothing or whatever and save money to spend elsewhere, tough shit mom and pop - oh and by the way, even if central planners like mc could have slowed or stopped WalMart, Amazon was gonna each your lunch anyway.

I remember as a kid, my mom taking the six of us to Harper Sports for gym shoes, another store for casual/dress shoes, the mall for school clothes and going to Sears or True Value or a local hardware store with my dad for hardware, lawn tools and supplies and the plumbing store if we had to fix a leaky faucet. But I don't miss any of that. I'm perfectly happy getting what I need from Costco, Home Depot, Amazon and an annual trip to the Michigan City outlets (Adidas, Brooks Brothers, maybe J crew - and I love that kitchen supply store) when we visit my sister's family at their summer house. Occasionally I'll have to go to a specialty store for something like a replacement valve or head for my way overpriced kitchen faucet that has to be replaced every 1.5 years and is not available at Home Depot. I honestly don't feel too bad for any of the kids I grew up with who couldn't take over dad's business because big box retailers and the internet took their business. It's called competition and you lost, get over it, get a job or start another business and deal with it.
