Eugenio Suarez

That kind of thing happens all of the time here. When Atlanta signed Shane Green as a free agent this year people were ripping Avila and CI for being stupid and cheap asses for not signing him to help the Tigers BP.

Atlanta signed him to a one year $1.5M contract.

He has pitched in 19 games for Atlanta. He has an 8.47 ERA and a 1.824 WHIP.

A blind squirrel finds a nut and even AA has a few good deals lol. Not many though right
Tom ?

How about the Willy Adames trade? I know that neither AA or DD had a crystal ball but we sure could use Willy at SS?

The Fister deal made no sense to me but the jewel in the deal, Robbie Ray, turned out to be an All Star starter. What did we get for Robbie Ray?

Robbie Rays transactions on BR.

June 8, 2010: Drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 12th round of the 2010 amateur draft. Player signed August 15, 2010.

December 2, 2013: Traded by the Washington Nationals with Ian Krol and Steve Lombardozzi to the Detroit Tigers for Doug Fister.

December 5, 2014: Traded as part of a 3-team trade by the Detroit Tigers with Domingo Leyba to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The New York Yankees sent Shane Greene to the Detroit Tigers. The Arizona Diamondbacks sent Didi Gregorius to the New York Yankees.

August 31, 2020: Traded by the Arizona Diamondbacks with cash to the Toronto Blue Jays for Travis Bergen.

October 28, 2020: Granted Free Agency.

November 7, 2020: Signed as a Free Agent with the Toronto Blue Jays.

It happens. Whatever bad trades we've made in the last 15 years we made it up with one, Miggy.

in my opinion, that Shane Greene to ATL for Joey Wentz is closer to looking nice for us! Joey would be in the rotation right now instead of piggybackers Alexander/Urena but he was set back a year due to TJS.

the Tigers rotation looks very good for next season! Mize/Skubal/Manning/Wentz/whoever holds this spot down until Turnbull comes back.

its so much more exciting being a Tigers fan when the team is literally flooded with talent from MLB all the way to Rookie league!

i do agree on some of the names the Tigers gave up on. giving up Willy Adames in the David Price trade seemed like a great idea at the time, so you cannot really be too mad about it since you have to give up top tier prospects to get an all-star pitcher. thats the beauty of being a seller, your scouts know your farm system very well and have a board similar to a draft board of who they would/could/want to get in trades from every MLB team.

Suarez was in hindsight an alright trade. Simon was coming off a career year when we traded for him. plus they more than made up for it by Justin Wilson for Jeimer Candelario, who is a much better fit at 3B than Suarez. not as much power but good numbers across and elite defense at 3B. i am glad Suarez found success, or "Geno" as the Reds announcers and fans refer to him.

looking back though, the Marlins got hosed badly for Miggy. the only players to really have any MLB success out of that were Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin. meanwhile we get a future hall of famer from his prime to his retirement. definitely one of the most lop-sided trades of ALL TIME. the only thing that would make it surpass the Smoltzspiracy was if the Tigers won at least 1 WS.

Robbie Ray was the one we should have not let go but this team has so much talent its almost amusing to fathom being angry about guys we traded years ago. oh no Suarez.. we got Candy! Robbie Ray eh we have Skubal who has disgusting stuff and a high ceiling as a front end SP. Avisail Garcia is doing so good! yeah but we have like 5 OF (Baddoo, Hill, Reyes, Cameron, Grossman) with 1 on the way (Greene) who would be starters on just about every MLB team.

its interesting to hear some of these trades because you can analyze them in retrospect, which is always a good time!

Ray is a bit different because his career has been up and down. He looks like a cy young candidate now but last year he was terrible. '16, below average, '19, average and he was terrible for us. Unfortunately Greene blew.

meanwhile, the Tigers have one of the most effective bullpen units in baseball. with the two-headed closer monster Soto/Fulmer, the emergence of Funkhouser and others in the fold. Alex Lange gives them a bigger boost. if Joe Jimenez can return to his old form next season, this bullpen could be downright dominant!

imagine having to live with trading for Jake Peavy and giving up Fernando Tatis Jr. or trading Manny Machado for, as of 2021, nobody special.

the Verlander trade looks about as even as it could get granted all the players we got back are currently injured. Daz Cameron, Jake Rogers and Franklin Perez. i wonder when/if Perez will return because of his severe injury.

i hope this offseason we can land, the two players i think will help put this team into contention, Trevor Story and Tucker Barnhart.

In the 6 seasons with at least 100 IP, he has only 2 seasons above a 2 WAR. 2017 and 2021. He has always had the great stuff, it is his control that has been the problem and repeating arm slot.

MLB Average for Quality Starts = 43%

2014 = 17%
2015 = 43%
2016 = 31%
2017 = 57%
2018 = 29%
2019 = 33%
2020 = 0% (zero of 11 starts)
2021 = 76%

From 2018-2020, 18 of 68 26.5%

So he is having a tremendous year. Can it be repeated? Or is this the outlier/fluke?

MLB QS % by year

2021 34%
2020 29%
2019 37%
2018 41%
2017 44%
2016 47%
2015 50%
2014 54%

There's was a time when it was a useful tool, but for many reasons(innings and pitch limits, more hard throwing relievers, openers) it's become a less useful tool.

Which is making the point. He has been below average especially if you take into account "openers". The Quality Start average would be higher without the "openers".

Bottom line is in the last 5 seasons he's had 2 great years, 2 average years and a small sample year last year where he was bad. I'd say last year would definitely be the outlier season and it's hard to hold last year against any player based on what they were up against.
