Fairley

Had him under contract for 5.5 mil but mayhew actively tries to get rid if ppl he drafts instead of develop them. #mayhewproblems

It was a glorious 7.5 games of him motivated in 2014. In hindsight, the option would be nice with Fairley but there were other motivation factors, Ngata, Walker and Reid. We would have to restructure somebody though or extend Ngata. Would Mayhew even make the trade for Ngata if he had Fairley on the roster. That's the real question.

Lions will have a ton of cap space next year. Mabye we'll get the big fella back. 2010 and 2011 was good for 5 and 3.5 years in Round 1 for thep icks. Good for 1.5 years in Round 2(Best) and 1 year in Round 2 with Titus (2011). Round 3/4 not good with Spievey/Fox and LeShoure. 5th and beyond who cares, though Young gave us like 2 good seasons out of 4 (that's great for a 7th round pick). Then Slick Willie Young got paid.

Suh and Best would be free agents this year. Everyone else in 2010 free agents last year. We chose not to pay Young. Though if Best worked out, then we don't spend money on Bush. Spievey, meh, we have Dig and Quin. Fox meh we have Reiff and Waddle/Lucas.

Young and LeShoure would be free agents this year. I wonder what crazy Titus Young would demand in contract negotiations. He'd probably want to be paid in a pool of gold coins like Scrooge McDuck.

Fairley's deal is at $5MM, and could go up to $8MM with bonuses.

And that was his top offer. Looks like no one was giving him $5.5MM a year, and most teams didn't want to go near that number.

Looks like we don't go near any numbers.....we have signed 1 free agent lol. A back up DT.

We're holeless and we average about 4 starters a draft. Oh and the last time we lost a wildcard game the next season went fine.

Have you seen the signing price of these free agents? Weak market and an increase in the cap and suddenly Jared Odrick is an $8.5MM a year player?

No way.

I'd much rather Mayhew sit on his hands, work on Mathis, and keep his eyes open for deal down the line than rush in and pay these stupid prices for players.

Being an early buyer this year is a good way to have even bigger cap problems in two years.

remember that one time when we were staring at spievery and don carey starting at safety and mayhews direct quote was "I didn't realize we were so thin." um yaaaaaaa......lmao.

Remember when Mayhew said that Xanders revamped the whole scouting process by introducing him to excel spreadsheets? Hey Oh!

the signing price is high because other teams have ACTUAL CAP SPACE that they need to spend lol.

Yeah, and LOSING RECORDS last year that caused the cap space.

It's easy to have plenty of space when you are 3-13 the year prior, but I sure wouldn't want that record in order to have money to rebuild from the ground up.

Which reminds me...

Raiders signed Ponder today. I'm betting they gave him a one year $20MM deal just to eat up space and get somewhere near the floor because no one will sign with them.

They are in deep shit if they don't do something soon.

Earlier I was hearing 4yrs/28m. This is reasonable.

IF he can stay healthy, he probably will end up making more than 28 mil over 4 years, he could make 8 this year and with the cap going up next year he might be in for a bigger pay day," IF"

Fairley weighed in at 280 for his rams physical, lightest he has been since his Auburn days. Watch him stay healthy and have some ridiculous year. Only the lions luck

He weighed 285 before camp last year, and our coaches forced him to add 20 lbs. I'll never understand that. If anything it makes him more versatile, which is what I thought the Lions were looking for. The Lions just signed a 290 lb dt, but they wanted Fairley at 305-310.

It's actually easy to understand....

Football people think like football people. They argue over defensive fronts, cover 2 vs. tampa 2, the west coast offense and the wildcat formation.. blah blah blah. But at the core, they all look at scouting the same way.

When Fairley was coming out of college, every scout said the same thing. "He can put on 20-25 lbs. of muscle, and still play fast". They all thought the extra muscle would equate to extra strength without losing speed.

Problem is, Fairley didn't put on muscle. He put on blubber like a seal. He got bigger, and he got slower. He didn't generate extra power, he generated extra credit card receipts at McDonalds.

20 pounds is not just 20 pounds. Scouts wanted him to put on 20 healthy pounds, and his pounds were not healthy pounds.

At 280, he's going to end up putting on 20 pounds again before the season, but with a personal chef, a nutritionist, and a good workout routine, he can put on 20 healthy pounds.

If he's serious about his career, he will do that. It remains to be seen, but the signs are looking good so far.

Maybe Fairley wasn't capable of putting on 20 more pounds without binge eating. He wasn't built like Suh(tree trunks for legs). A healthy Fairley isn't a the "proper" size for a 4-3 DT nor a DE. I would've liked to see him play at his Auburn weight, and now it looks like I'm going to get the chance.
