Fred Phelps; founder WBC on deathbed

might have been the Onion ....or some other satirical link from social media. I can't find it now.

This man gets it, unlike some of the people commenting on this topic. And he's much closer to the circumstances.

Well, the guy also brought a suit against Westboro Baptist regarding their demonstrations at his son's funeral.

I used to think that Westboro's demonstrations at the funerals of fallen servicemen was probably the stupidest and most offensive protest of the changing perspective of gays in the military by political and military leaders possible.

What do the fallen heroes have to do with the political machinations of Bill Clinton and Colin Powell and William Gates and Barack Obama?

...

sounds like the protest didn't really affect him anyway:
The picketing was conducted under police supervision some 1,000 feet from the church, out of the sight of any of those at the church. The protest was not unruly; there was no shouting, profanity or violence.?
too bad the Supreme Court overturned the verdict awarding him $11 million in damages for that...

what makes a lawsuit frivolous is relative, I guess.

I guess they subscribe to the theory that no publicity is bad publicity.

They're a small fringe church anyway; all they need is probably to bring in a couple bigoted cranks a year to the cause to sustain themselves. While, 99.99% of Americans may be repulsed by their antics, in a nation of 300 million, that still leaves 30,000 potential members nationwide.

I guess I was mistaken about the Westboro protests of military funerals...for some reason I always thought they were protesting "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and later the ending of the ban on gays in the military...

Now I'm hearing they were protesting tolerance in the United States to homosexuality in general...and they would also include funerals of police and firefirghters - along with military - the protectors of a nation that chose to practice tolerance in its laws and general perceptions of people with non-traditional lifestyles.

I never paid much attention to them. As repugnant as they are they're quite insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
