Game 28 Tigers vs Rays May 1, 2018 7:10 pm EST

Shane Greene waited less than 24 hours to find redemption for Monday night's blown save.

The Detroit Tigers closer pitched a perfect ninth inning to preserve a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night at Comerica Park.

Tigers starter Matthew Boyd struck out a season-high seven batters through six innings, and relievers Alex Wilson and Joe Jimenez pitched scoreless innings to provide a bridge to Greene.

The Tigers got on the board first after Jeimer Candelario reached on an infield single and Nicholas Castellanos doubled him home in the third.

They added another run on Leonys Martin's RBI double in the fifth, but left two runners in scoring position and wouldn't seriously threaten again until stranding two runners again in the eighth.

That left just a one-run margin for Greene, who gave up three runs in less than an inning of work on Monday, squandering a brilliant outing by starter Jordan Zimmermann.

But there was no such drama on Tuesday, as he quickly dispatched Carlos Gomez and Rob Refsnyder on strikes and got Mallex Smith to ground out weakly to the mound.

WORTH NOTING

* Boyd's fastball routinely registered 90-91 mph on Tuesday, a few ticks higher than 88-89 mph he recorded last month.

The warm weather probably didn't hurt. The thermometer read 83 degrees at game time, the Tigers' warmest game of the season to date.

* Tigers reliever Alex Wilson got two outs in two pitches to open the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Denard Span singled on the first pitch, then was erased quickly when Adeiny Hechavarria hit into a 5-4-3 double play.

* Rays catcher Wilson Ramos extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the fourth inning. He tried to score when Rob Refsnyder singled three batters later. Instead, after running through third base coach Matt Quatraro's stop sign, he was thrown out at the plate by Tigers center fielder Leonys Martin.

Ramos, who was out by perhaps 25 feet, didn't even bother to slide.

* Entering Tuesday's game, the Tigers had scored 49 of their 124 runs (39.5 percent) in the seventh inning or later. That's fourth-most in the American League.

Lefty Matthew Boyd (1-2) allowed one run on seven hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out seven ? all swinging. He threw 96 pitches, 61 for strikes. He's had a quality start in all but one of his five starts this season. ...

Righty Chris Archer allowed two runs on six hits over six innings for the Rays. He walked one and struck out six.

Martin went 2-for-4 and Jeimer Candelario had a single and scored in the third. He finished 2-for-4.
Jos? Iglesias finished 0-for-3, snapping a seven-game hitting streak. Castellanos finished 1-for-3, including an intentional walk in the eighth.

Alex Wilson allowed one hit in one inning with one strikeout.
Joe Jim?nez struck out two batters in his one inning. Of the 14 pitches he threw, three were fastballs.
Tigers closer Shane Greene earned his fifth save, bouncing back after giving up a pair of home runs in Monday's 3-2 loss.

Rays catcher Wilson Ramos tried to score from second on a single by Rob Refsnyder. Mistake. Leonys Martin threw him out by 20 feet. Since 2013, Martin ranks fourth among active players with 52 outfield assists.
