Jose Iglesias singled in the winning run past a drawn-in infield in the ninth inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.
JaCoby Jones began the inning with an infield single against Mariners reliever Juan Nicasio and Niko Goodrum followed with a single to right after an eight-pitch at-bat.
With the infield in, Iglesias slapped a single up the middle to set off another late celebration for the Tigers, who have already played 16 one-run games this season (and won eight of them).
Tigers left-hander Blaine Hardy gave up eight hits and couldn't make it out of the fifth inning in his first career start, but he was rarely hit hard and skillfully escaped a couple of jams.
The biggest escape came after he left in the fifth. Reliever Warwick Saupold inherited two runners from Hardy and then loaded the bases by walking Mitch Haniger. But Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias made a brilliant play on Ryon Healy's grounder up the middle, starting a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and preserve a 2-2 tie.
Tigers right fielder Niko Goodrum, playing for an injured Nicholas Castellanos, led off the fifth inning with a solo home run. Two innings earlier, he got the Tigers' first hit off James Paxton, ensuring the Mariners starter wouldn't be throwing another no-hitter on Sunday.
Goodrum had a game-high three hits on the day.
The Tigers added another run in the seventh when Mikie Mahtook doubled home Iglesias, who had reached base after getting hit by a pitch.
Tigers reliever Joe Jimenez had a chance to escape the eighth inning, but he couldn't handle the throw from first baseman John Hicks while covering the bag at first on a grounder from speedy Mariners lead-off man Dee Gordon. The next hitter, Jean Segura, blasted a bases-loaded single up the middle past a diving Iglesias. The two unearned runs tied the game at 4.
Shane Greene pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning to earn the win.
The Tigers (17-22) took two of three from the Mariners (22-17), who they will play again in Seattle in four days.
WORTH NOTING
* Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano broke a finger in his right hand when he was hit by a pitch in the third inning.
The Mariners said Cano was diagnosed with a fractured fifth metacarpal.
Former Tiger Andrew Romine pinch-ran for Cano and remained in the game as his replacement.
* Tigers reliever Buck Farmer pitched a scoreless seventh inning after working in both games of Saturday's doubleheader.
Farmer hasn't allowed an earned run since April 29. Over his last eight appearances, he's allowed just one walk and one hit (a single) in 8 innings, striking out seven.
He allowed five runs in his first outing of the season on April 1. Since then, Farmer has an ERA of just 1.47 in 18 1/3 innings.
Hardy, making a spot start in place of Jordan Zimmermann, who is on the disabled list, threw 4 1/3 innings. He allowed a solo home run to Kyle Seager in the first inning but generally limited the damage. He allowed two runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out three batters and walking one.
Goodrum took Paxton out to the opposite field for his second home run of the season, a go-ahead shot in the fifth inning.
Mikie Mahtook drove in two runs, the second to provide some insurance in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Pete Kozma has four RBI in three games.
JaCoby Jones scored the game-winning run.
Warwick Saupold inherited two baserunners and stranded them on an inning-ending double play in the fifth inning.
Buck Farmer extended his scoreless streak to eight innings.
Joe Jimenez can only blame himself. In the eighth, he allowed a single, hit a batter, committed an error and then surrendered a game-tying, two-run single to Jean Segura.
Shane Greene pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the win.
