RT @susanslusser I have had it confirmed that the #Tigers are trying to make a strong push for Gio Gonzalez. #Athletics

Im not sure how I feel about this, especially depending on what kind of package we'd have to send. he has a fairly high walk rate and with our defense im not sure about getting another groundball pitcher.

The Tigers are trying to "make a strong push" to acquire Athletics lefty Gio Gonzalez, tweets Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. However, the Tigers aren't sure whether they'll be able to make an offer as strong as a potential Yankees proposal, Slusser says (Twitter link).

It was reported today, by Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record, that the Athletics asked the Yankees for Jesus Montero plus either Dellin Betances or Manny Banuelos in exchange for Gonzalez (Twitter link). With the Yankees highly unlikely to part with such a significant haul, the two teams may not be a match, since the Yanks don't have the high-upside young outfielders the Athletics covet.

Well there is really only 2 options for us in that department. Either Austin Jackson or Brennan Boesch. Not sure I would agree with this move as it will be for sure costly unless there are other options out there DD is working on.

I really don't understanding the move right now at least to be honest since all the time when talking about pitching it was looking for a solid 5th starter not someone the caliber of Gonzalez.

I hope we don't pay too much for him.. He is a very good starter, but no lock top 2 pitcher imo..

He's young, and a lefty who can strike guys out. Which is needed because he's a walking machine, damn :) . Still manage to have a nice ERA. I wouldn't be too opposed.

Was looking up Gio on ESPN and their new little Did You Know has this as their fact. "Gio Gonzalez is 1 of 778 players to have played for the Oakland Athletics , a list that also includes Bill Almon." While it is a little cool knowing that 778 players have played for the A's, I feel like that is a pretty worthless Did You Know. I also like how they say, "that also includes.." I just found it a bit humorous.

And I would like him in our rotation, but obviously depends on how much we give up, and if what we give up affects us getting a position player that could play 2nd or 3rd.

Considering some of the views out there is that it will more then likely cost either Turner or Castellanos. However there is some rumblings that were looking at possibly Porcello and Castellanos for Gonzalez. Also the A's have been said to like Austin Jackson especially considering they are losing Crisp so stay tuned for sure.

That is a very steep price for a number 2 or 3 starter especially when you factor in what we gave up for Fister at the deadline is nowhere near what the A's are asking for Gio.

beck mentions turner, smyly, jackson. forgot to mention rape. seems like alot.
Gonzalez is eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter and will not be eligible for free agency until 2016. Slusser also reported that sources close to the Tigers were unsure whether the club would be able to put together a package as good as the Yankees could put together to get a deal done. The Yankees reportedly balked at Oakland's demand for Jesus Montero plus either Dellin Betances or Manny Banuelos. The Tigers simply don't have that kind of talent in their minor league system, and if they were to match that kind of demand, they'd probably have to deal from the major league roster.

Rape, lol. I like Jackson, I think he can rebound just put him down the order, he'll relax and become a better player. But I like him in CF.

Yeah, His babip was going to come down from 2010, he also must have been thinking tooooo much swing or take the pitch, thinking more/pressure from, at leadoff. the a's might want him too to cover losin crisp. lots of mention of the package for dan haren.

Yeah it seems like it will cost a kings ransom for him at this point which makes no sense for us really to be honest. Considering they were asking the Yankees for Jesus Montero plus either Dellin Betances or Manny Banuelos in that they are asking for 2 of the Yankees top 3 prospects.

I am all for upgrading the rotation but damn at the cost to get Gonzalez when we already have a pretty solid 1-4 rotation and a move like this will very much limit other moves we could make to upgrade areas of need right now.

I could MAYBE understand Porcello/Jackson/Smyly but hell even that is a lot to give up for a #2 or 3 starter especially when you really have to factor in what we gave up for Fister last season.

I think Jackson will have to be part of the deal to make it happen. Hard to imagine Jackson not being in CF, that could be an issue. However, finding a CF is a lot easier than a decent left handed starter.

The Tigers need to run away fast if that's the true asking price. I like Gonzalez, but not for that package of players.

Everything I've heard says they are asking for a huge return for Gonzalez. The Yankees basically laughed when they asked for Montero and Banuelos from what the MLB on XM guys were saying.

I think we should stay away from him. It looks like the price tag is too high simply because there is too much interest in him. He could be a huge addition though, that would be a nice 1-5.

Gonzalez is very overrated. He is greatly aided by pitching in Oakland, which if it isn't the best park for pitchers in the AL, it's second or third. His WHIP away from Oakland is over 1.4 in both of his good years, which would make him the Tigers fifth starter. He's not worth the top prospects.
