STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The seventh-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team broke a 1-1 deadlock with three second-half goals to lift the Wolverines to a 4-1 win over No. 11 Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals Friday morning (Nov. 4) at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. Michigan now advances to the championship game Sunday (Nov. 6) at 2 p.m.

Michigan struck first on its first penalty corner of the game. Sophomore Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) scored on a direct corner at 8:27 with assists to senior Jess Allen (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional) and fifth-year senior Eileen Brandes (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth).

However, Iowa answered just 3:30 later, when Kim Scraper scored her 17th goal of the season, slipping a shot in the right side of the cage. Iowa held a slim 6-5 shot advantage in the first 35 minutes.

The game remained tied through much of the second half before the Wolverines finally broke through. Sophomore Mallory Albini (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) took the ball into the circle and her shot from 10 yards out beat Iowa keeper Kathleen McGraw on the right side at 54:42, starting a string of three goals in less than 10 minutes.

Freshman Axelle Wouters (Antwerp, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe Antwerp) made it 3-1 with a Mack assist at 59:48, and the scoring ended at 64:08 as senior Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) scored on a corner with an assist to freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes).

Michigan outshot Iowa 11-2 in the second half and 16-8 in the contest. Both teams had six penalty corners.

Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) had three saves in the victory, her eighth of the season. McGraw made seven stops for the Hawkeyes.

Michigan will face either No. 9 Penn State in Sunday's championship game at State college, and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
