Cant seem to find it, so maybe someone knows. Do these phones still work during the shutdown? I am a strong believer that these phones are a huge waste of tax payer money, however if they work during the shut down that is ridiculous.

They do. I don't have a problem with the program, at least not in comparison to corporate welfare

It's actually an extention of telecommunication subsidy policy that goes back to the Communications Act of 1934.

The term "Obamaphone" comes from this video that went viral, but the lady really didn't get her phone from Obama, except she doesn't know it.

Right, but this gives us the opportunity to lool at a poor black person who's less fortunate so we can all laugh and feel superior

Not me.

I laughed at her and felt superior to her a year ago, when the video first went viral.

Now it does nothing.

Im not laughing or judging anyone. I think its pathetic the way tax dollars are spent. I have to issue with government aid, but it needs to be controlled better. I see enough people with these phones that don't need them, and while my sources may be limited it still pisses me off.

Can you live your day-to-day life without a telephone? You assume they don't "need" them but what do you know? Sounds to me like you are judging them.

I remember people in the 80's when I was younger who had landline telephones that were provided by some governmental-assistance, the only difference is it's cheaper and easier to use cellular phones now.

Also you're bitching they should be shut off during the government shutdown...the government does not own the networks and cellular repeaters the phones run off, and I'm sure the contracts are not paid on a day-to-day basis, so explain to me how they should be shut-off while the government is shutdown?

Whole rant sounds kind of petty.

If the government is providing people with land lines then that is fine and totally acceptable, however, if they are providing them with smartphones so they can surf the net on the go then that is a waste of taxpayer dollars.

every "obamaphone" ive ever seen has been a super basic flip phone. it may be that ive just never seen one, but i doubt theyre giving out smartphones with this program.

Yes I can live my life day to day with out my cell phone. In my life its a luxury I work for and not a necessity. I can remember a day back in the 80's when no one had a phone every where they went.

I dont know the details on how they work the payments but I am sure they can be turned off. Also the way they have closed down national parks and memorials. A guy I work with just came back from the Smokey Mountains, all I heard about was how they couldn't wait to walk the trails. He just came back and the park was shut down. Gates closed off, Rangers patrolling to make sure no one entered. Tax payer funds built those parks, why shut them down so you can make a phone call?

Also the the only government issued phones I have come in contact with have been android phones. Regardless its a waste, sorry most of the crap is a drain on the system and unregulated.

Additional: I have seen people with 2 and 3 cellphones at least one was a government issued phone. One person had 2 issued phones. Now, explain to me why or how that could happen. Its a waste and unregulated, I am not happy that money is deducted from my check to pay for such amenities.

I think you're full of shit about the android bit. The only thing I see is 250 mins and 250 texts each month and 1 per household.

Sorry, but the government is not paying for anyones 4G service on their android phone. Read the FAQ's on the second link about using smartphones such as android, iphone or blackberry.

Or you can keep ranting about a subject you seem to know very little about, or could even bother to research.

Since we're on this topic of phones, verizon made 40 billion in profit and paid zero, I repeat, zero in taxes.

I'm sure that won't generate any outrage with the right. Big business has their hand out just like the poor, everyones a taker, not just the 47% that mitt talked about

Frankly I dont care what you think. Its bull shit regardless.

I see the people with the phones, next time I get a chance I will double check.

The government pays for enough, cell service is not something that should be paid for when people are not getting their pay for work they are actually doing.

Yeah thats bull shit as well. This is a small piece of the puzzle and wasn't meant to get so heated or off track.

Wait, how can you tell if it's a government issued phone?
