Guardians @ Tigers Game #46 May 29th, 2022

Rodriguez out, looks like he pulled a hammy.

The fill ins for the fill ins are getting hurt.

The Tigers have been held to 0 or 1 run 14 times in 45 games.
That is 31% of their games.

Miguel Cabrera not in lineup today, but was feeling better than when he left game Saturday. He'll spend today receiving treatment in hopes of returning to Tigers lineup on Monday vs. Twins.

Alex Lange entered this weekend with the highest swing-and-miss rate in MLB at 44.7 percent (minimum 100 swings). He induced two whiffs on eight swings today, but both were strikeouts.

Robbie Grossman left Sunday?s game with neck spasms, according to A.J. Hinch.

Jeimer Candelario was supposed to have a day off, but he's pinch-hitting for Robbie Grossman in the third inning. Grossman was the DH today.

Jeimer Candelario has three hits in his last 27 at-bats. Two of them are home runs.

Elvin Rodriguez left his start today with lower body cramping, according to Tigers announcement.

Harold Castro is now tied for the Tigers lead in home runs with a drive to LF off Triston McKenzie, his fourth HR this season and third since Wednesday.

Jose Cisnero threw a 40-pitch bullpen session in Lakeland. He?s getting close to facing hitters, then a rehab assignment starting in Lakeland.

Tyler Alexander will throw three innings in a rehab start for Mud Hens on Monday, then four innings later in the week. Tigers will decide after that how he fits in pitching staff.

Ballgame. Tigers 2 - Guardians 1.

Series victory for the Tigers. The story today: The bullpen continues to be great.

Tigers are 17-29.

The Tigers are now 2-21 this year when they score 2 runs or fewer.

Detroit wins their first series against Cleveland since the home opening series in 2021. At the same time last year, they lost 3 out of 4 to Cleveland at home.

Tigers 2 - Guardians 1: Bullpen outlasts Trevor McKenzie, while Harold homers again.
Another tough day at the plate, but the Tigers were buoyed by a pair of home runs and good efforts from the bullpen and defense.

Harold Castro, Jeimer Candelario do just enough in Detroit Tigers' 2-1 win over Cleveland.

I knew I remember Bertram from that 2019 national runner-up team.

They just said that he was on that national runner-up team, and you know what I said to my wife?

I said ?I knew I remembered Bertram from that national runner-up team.?

Son of a bitch, right?

What happened to Baddoo? He's only played two games in Toledo, is he hurt?

MONDAY MUSINGS.
Totally Tigers

Surprise, dear readers! On this holiday, I?m turning the tables on you.

Instead of my weekly trio of observations about the past week, I?m asking you to share just a single one of yours.

What smaller story came to your attention over the past week that you found most interesting?

For this day only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to tell us all about it.

Robbie Grossman started Sunday?s game as the designated hitter for the Tigers but was replaced by Jeimer Candelario. Manager A.J. Hinch told reporters after the game, including Jason Beck of MLB.com, that Grossman was experiencing neck spasms. While it doesn?t appear Grossman is headed for a lengthy absence, it?s surely frustrating for a Detroit team that has been heavily snakebit this season.

Though the club entered the season with hopes of competing for a playoff spot, they?ve been hit by a large number of injuries, most notably in the starting rotation. The club?s record is currently 17-29, putting them second-last in the American League, ahead of only the Royals. That has the club trending towards being sellers at the deadline this year, with short-term assets the most likely to go. Grossman fits that bill, as he?s in the second season of the two-year deal he signed with Detroit in 2021. Unfortunately, his trade value is likely at a low ebb, due to his slow start to the year. After hitting .239/.357/.415 last year for a wRC+ of 114, he?s currently slashing .199/.311/.241 this year for a 71 wRC+. Last year?s 23.1% strikeout rate has also shot up to 30.7% this year. He and the Tigers will both surely be hoping that this current issue can be quickly left behind so that Grossman can get back on track.
The Blue Jays tried to acquire Grossman at last year?s deadline, though they may not have as much interest now, based on his campaign so far.
