I'm surprised this hasn't been posted already

Well, in both cases an unarmed black kid was killed, and in the former instance it took a nationwide protest before the state pressed charges, and in the latter, white-washed it with a grand jury investigation that saw the state introduce a witness that gave inconsistent testimony and wasn't even there, among other procedural gaffes.

Or is that understanding too complicated for you to grasp?

Tell me something about Al Sharpton now. Al Sharpton complained right? So there must be no issue, since we all know Al Sharpton makes every argument invalid.

Well in the former, 3 different law enforcement agencies investigated the case including the FBI and either determined that Trayvon was shot in self defense or that race was not an issue or both. But the media and the protestors (I guess this is where I'm supposed to envoke Al Sharpton so you can say all I have is Al Sharpton) knew better and they demanded an indictment. Of course, all they did was waste taxpayer money because the trial came to the same conclusion as the 3 investigations. In the latter, hands up, don't shoot was a lie and the prosecutions star witness was shown to be a liar.

I know understanding that is too complicated for you to grasp, as is the possibility than not every white cop is a racist murderer.

And of course, Al Sharpton!

How does that validate the outrage in the Trayvon Martin case? Or the Mike Brown case? There are plenty of instances of false outrage, like "hands up, don't shoot"

The anger is over the persisting inequality. When something happens that appears to be a good example, the protesting starts. The anger isn't actually about the triggering event, it's about the rest of the inequality. So when the triggering event turns out to have been a poor example, nobody cares, because it wasn't about that to being with.

SOME of the anger and outrage is legitimate or at least possibly legitimate some of it is over bullshit like Mike Brown was executed by a racist white cop and that cops routinely summarily execute minorities. Neither is remotely true. That's false outrage.

agreed.

now imagine if there was no video account of this murder ....

I doubt the cops story would have stood up to the forensic evidence...8 rounds fired, all 5 that struck the victim were in the back and not at close range, physical evidence the suspect was tased which would contradict any evidence the cop was threatened with his own taser - those cables can't deploy twice - no physical evidence the cop was assaulted, eyewitness testimony to corroborate the forensic evidence...

Just my opinion here, but I don't believe any of these protests would have gotten as big as they did without the racial inequality. I'm not saying just a little. I'm saying Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown would not have made the national news at all if not for racial inequality. It's not about the people that get shot. It's about profiling and unequal sentencing and how people feel they are treated.

Yes, because I say so because I'm the only one who thinks and says it.

Well as long as you (and people who think like you) are around to decide what is false outrage and what is justifiable outrage for the rest of us, I guess things can't be too bad off.

'Merica. Fuck Yea!

You forgot to mention fealty to the Christian God - it's not just blind patriotism. You're usually a much more thorough bigot when you stereotype anyone who disagrees with you - michturd must be very disappointed in you at the moment thumbass.

Likewise, I merely expressing mine. But to be clear, I didn't and am not saying all the outrage is false and/or misguided just that there is a lot of it.

Holy shit, you're going around deciding what's acceptable outrage, and now trying to turn that same argument around on me? LOL

Waffle some more Sparty.

Seeing the 'dash cam' now ...why didn't this fuckwad fat ass cop simply run after and chase down this guy..?!

What a fucking asshole. He should be subject to death by firing squad. Let ISIS have him.

I love that his initial lawyer was even like, "yeah, fuck this guy, I'm outta here...let the fucker fry...no way am I going down with this ship"

This guy should plead guilty in hopes of avoiding DP. If I'm a nudge, I appoint the greenest lawyer possible cuz no experienced lawyer deserves this trouble. Let a newbie get some experience on a case without hope.

He should plead self defense then try to escape when everyone
in the court room is rolling on the floor in hysterics.

Is that what I'm doing? I'm "going around" deciding what's real outrage and what's not? By stating my opinion I'm declaring myself the arbiter of legitimate outrage? What about Gulo? He disagreed, stating his opinion. Is he not doing the same? And turn what argument around on you? You haven't made an argument. You've just gone from trolling to your own false outrage over my opinion. What's next? Can I expect another clever gif or meme that you think insults me?

Don't take that the wrong way Gulo, I don't have a problem with anything you've said - I was merely making a point about my little personal troll

*cough* backpedaling *cough*

Would love to hear you explain that. Show me where i said all the outrage is false or none of it was legitimate. I said there has been a lot of false or misdirected outrage. I'm not backing off from that one bit.

*cough* troll *cough*

I follow. No offense taken.

But to get back to the point, why do you think most of the people that protested the Mike Brown thing were protesting?

if you scroll down Reddit/news pretty much every day there's a story of the police shooting and killing an unarmed civilian.

Most of these cases involve African American victims.

there are now websites dedicated to tracking the number of police killings in the United States.

this happens often enough that Radley Balko, a libertarian writer, has a regular column for the WaPo that covers police abuses, from killings, to overreaching surveillance & false or unjustified warrantless arrests.

prosecutors lie in court. all. the. time. and unlike just about every other lawyer in private practice or criminal defense, they are rarely - if ever - disciplined for this.

police killings in this country are reaching epidemic levels... it's shocking the number of people killed by police in the United States this year alone. And it's even more shocking when you look at the numbers of other countries and see we're the only one where this happens.

there are a number of reasons for it: high unemployment (especially among African American communities) leading to few career alternatives other than criminal activity; a media that villifyies those who live in these communities, calls for tougher laws and policing, and is complicit in spreading propaganda from police spokespeople; for-profit prisons; a prison system focused on punishment, not rehabilitation; prosecutors who can only advance their careers by running up numbers of convictions; state bars reluctant to sanction or disbar prosecutors for abuses that regularly result in suspension or disbarment for other attorneys...

I honestly don't know. I wasn't there and I doubt that any source (liberal, mainstream or conservative media) gives an complete, fair or accurate portrayal. But I'm not trying to tear down or discredit an entire movement by pigeon holing it all into misdirected or false outrage. What I do know is certain narratives have been proven false or at least unsubstantiated but continued to be or are still a big part of the story and are the genesis of significant false outrage. Athletes, celebrities and congressman donning hoodies, athletes taking the field with their hands up, musicians doing the same thing at awards show recently, etc, etc. I think the riots in Ferguson and a good amount of the protests in general were motivate by "hands up, don't shoot".

It's bad that the stats don't exist, and we need to change that and work for transparency and fairness in cases where police cross the line, but we need to do it in a way that doesn't vilify all police. If you want good people to want to be police officers, you have to appreciate what they do. Stereotype them as racists and assholes and the only people that will take the job will be racists and assholes.

In one guy's search, in 2011, 1,146 people were shot and 607 died. 1971, police in NYC shot 314 people, killing 94. So while it may be bad, I suspect it was worse. I hope the push for body cameras catches on. That would help a lot.

http://jimfishertruecrime.blogspot.com/2012/01/police-involved-shootings-2011-annual.html

Those 2011 numbers are close to 2 people shot and 1 dying per 500,000 people, but who knows how inclusive his search was. The Washington Post mentioned his numbers in an article complaining about the lack of data, so presumably it's one of the better efforts out there.
