I'm glad I found this board, and I've been looking for somewhere to express my disgust/disappointment about this! If any of you remember me from the ESPN boards, you may remember I mentioned a few times that Lou Whitaker was/is my favorite MLB player of all time. I'm not claiming he is/was the best MLB player, just MY favorite.
After Lou Whitaker spent his career with the Tigers, alongside Alan Trammell, I can't believe the Tigers organization would not retire #1 & #3! A few years ago, some of you likely remember Sheffield Getting #3, and that should have never happened! Whitaker and Trammell were a huge part of the Tigers organization for 20 years! They were classy players, they came to work everyday, did their jobs to the best of their ability, had fun and made the Tigers worth watching for many of us, even when the team wasn't playing well.
Maybe Whitaker and Trammell's career numbers are not the caliber of Al Kaline, Gehringer, or Greenberg, however, in my opinion, they deserve to have their numbers retired EVERY BIT as much as those players! Furthermore, Willie Horton?!?!? Not putting the man down, but if his number is retired, and Whitaker and trams are not, there's something VERY wrong!
Anyways, I know this thread is a bit old, and I'm late to the party here, but I've wanted to discuss this and now I finally found some place to state my opinion.
I party agree with you. They should be retired but since they aren't, I don't have a huge problem with Iggy wearing 1.
I agree KC and it is quite possible that in 10 years we'll be talking about retiring the #1 for an entirely different reason.

Nothing against Lou or Alan, but that statement describes a good majority of MLB players also.
A good majority of MLB players stay with the same team for 20 years/their entire playing career? That's not even remotely accurate! They didn't cause drama, they were a picture perfect definition of professionalism as MLB players. They both meant a lot to Tigers fans, especially to Tigers fans who grew up watching them play!
Ryan Sandberg and Ozzie Smith have comparable numbers and time with their respective teams, are both in the HOF and have their numbers retired with those teams.
That's not going to happen and I'm disappointed that'd you'd even suggest it.
As an aside, I would have liked to see Mattingly's number retired with
The Yankees. Until I saw him push down Trammell recently. Maybe a petty reason
But, whatever.
Its way way way way way way way way way too early to talk about Iggy being better than Sweet Lou.
Issue is whether he stays with DET for the next 10 years and health. I would say given health, he is the best defensive SS for a long, long time just in a handful of games. Imagine what he will do with more "EXPERIENCE"!
How is it way to early to speculate what will happen in 10 years? If you wait 10 years then there would be nothing to speculate about.
And forget Sweet Lou, because from what I have seen Iggy needs to be compared to, or better than, Ozzie Smith.
The runs he is going to save is something that will never get full credit.
Because one guy has 20 years and the other just a few games. I hope he continues to bat .280 but I don't know, its too early.
