Josh Smith waived

I just read that. AWESOME!!!

Of course...Joe Dumars is STILL having a negative impact on the Pistons!

SVG shouldn't get all this praise. He is the same dope that turned down several smith to Sacramento trades this summer

yeah, he turned them all down because they were asking for a first round pick just to take on Smith's contract. would you have given away a potential top 5 pick and smith?

they're using the stretch provision that breaks down his remaining salary over the next 5 years. this also will give them a little cap relief over the next few years too, not to mention, if/when a team signs Smith, we get further cap relief due to that contract alleviating our total payout.

good moves to get rid of someone so apathetic about actually playing.

You are missing what I am saying, im not talking about trades during the season.

Twice this summer Sacramento proposed trades with svg that he rejected. Twice it was just 2 players straight up for smith. No picks included

He said no because he thought he could fix him

I just read the first link, all speculation and doesn't mean that a pick wasn't involved. It never said it was or wasn't.

SVG shouldn't get any praise for dumping Smith. But he shouldn't be bashed for failing to make a trade either. All the available Smith trades were for equally large, bad contracts for other players. There's no guarantee Thompson/Landry would have been any easier to move, and in no trade scenario was Detroit receiving a young player with any potential.

This move does almost nothing for the team long term. If SVG was truly set on keeping Monroe, he would have ponied up the money over the summer (and btw, with the huge cap jump in 2016, wouldn't ANY contract have ended up being reasonable long term?) The team is still sadly devoid of talent and young players still aren't developing. Further, dumping Smith now probably improves the team, which could again hurt draft position for a team with no ability to compete this year.

It's been a depressing last half decade. Moving on from Smith means one less thing I can get frustrated with while watching games, but promises nothing sunny in the future. Maybe we can land Mudiay next year and end the Jennings experiment as well. But the more likely scenario is that we land another big man (there are 6 in the top 8). Obviously you can't choose your draft year, but it makes me things aren't getting any better next year.

I think it's the opposite, short term it doesn't nothing..long term it helps. Give it a couple years and let SVG build his own team..with or likely without Monroe. It'd be better if the NBA wasn't all fk'd up.

I'm with you. The only thing this does short-term is allow for an easier look at the kids without having to deal with a disgruntled vet sitting on the bench, and it also makes it easier to tank under the guise of rebuilding. It may also help our odds of resigning Monroe, though I'm still not convinced that he and Drummond pair well.

I'm hoping that we dump Jennings, get the kids as much playing time as possible, and tank for the best lottery odds we can get. An accelerated rebuild like this might actually get me interested again.

might as well tank at this point, we can't be much worse. I'd rather those shots go to other players anyway. I'd like to see a team next year that includes Moose, Drummond, and Emanuel Mudiay, outside of that nobody is really worth keeping

We're tanking, whether intentionally or not, so don't sweat it too much. LOL!

I heard a bit of the SVG interview on 97.1 this morning and he said he needs to find minutes for Dinwiddie soon at PG. He also talked about Smith's ball/shot hogging (he put it nicer than that, but that's what he was saying) and how KCP needs more attempts. Reading between the lines, I think Jennings is gonna get traded or at least see his minutes shrink real soon. They're basically gonna spend this season seeing what can be salvaged for next year and the rest may get put out to the curb for pick up.

I have no idea why he would want Dinwiddle to get more minutes...he wasn't good in college...I don't know why anybody would think he will be good in the NBA

yeah, i have no clue why they would have drafted a first round talent (before his injury) who seems to excel at all the things this team actually needs </sarcasm>

lol

Assuming that he can regain his past form, Dinwiddie should be a solid NBA player ... Would fit well alongside an undersized scorer like Monta Ellis ... He relies heavily on screens to get shots, is not an especially gifted ball handler, is a little too upright and stiff to defend smaller, quicker guards, and perhaps most importantly, spent a great deal of time playing off the ball in college

so this is who they drafted to be a PG?

I totally expected to click on this and read "HA, HA! Made you look!".

Bottom line: good move, but we still have no starting caliber players besides Drummond and Moose. Long way to go.
