Kyle O'Brien hired as Director of Player Personnel

Go look at the Jacksonville Jaguars roster and come back to me. All you see is "Jacksonvill Jaguars" i'm assuming. Ignorant as usual, but not surprising. Also was a former scout for the Patriots and Chiefs.

It was a legit question. What talent was he responsible for? Who on the team were his guys?

Since you said he " Brought in some major league talent." I figure you would know

I've gotta admit that the Quinn, Caldwell, and O'Brien moves have been pretty "meh" in my view. I want to like them, and I hope they are as great as some here think, but none of them excite me in the least. Quinn seems like an amateur who is surrounding himself with familiar faces and who the Fords are doing the same with Acorsi and Wood. I guess we can say that it is good to see that they finally went outside the organization and didn't stick with Sheldon White or another loyal loser, but is that worth getting excited about? For me, not yet. I hope the results are good and I can start to buy in more.

Were you really that much more impressed by Bridgewater in year 2 than Bortles? Bortles showed huge improvement in year 2 and I'd say you could make an argument for either guy at this point.

Actually I am. Clearly Bortles has a cannon for an arm, but I really think Teddy is something special. His composure under pressure is off the charts for a second year guy.

However, it really doesn't matter to me which guy edges the other out. My point is when every scout out there is saying "This is the best guy in the draft", and the Kiper starts in with his "I have heard scouts don't like him as much as people say" crap... you have to wonder why the guy fell?

I think way too often people in the NFL ignore their own hard work in evaluating a player and panic the minute Kiper opens his trap.

One of those two guys will end up the "better" 1st rounder from that draft, cause Johnny Backup sure won't. But going into that draft, Bridgewater was far and away more polished than anyone, and really should have been #1 overall. And I have no explanation for his freefall other than people listening to the talking heads.

cant be worse than mayhews scouting. Im sure he uses spreadsheets and databases atleast.

Not to say he's blameless for any bad picks, but without any firm knowledge of how the front office works I can't really say how well he performed in his role. I doubt he ultimately makes the pick and, depending on egos, the information he provided might not be all that useful to the higher ups. Ever since those stories of Millen in the draft room came out, I'm hesitant to pin anything on lower tier employees...sometimes it's poor decisions based on bad information, sometimes there's miscommunication, sometimes it's a series of bad decisions, sometimes it's just one bad decision. Obviously Quinn sees some value in him.

This is absolutely true too. If I am not mistaken he was the director of college personnel. So he is the guy who hands the draft analysis over to the guy who makes the call... in theory. We never really know who pulls the trigger in the war room.

On some teams, it's a group decision. On some, it's the GM. And on some, the owner is going to make those decision in the 1st round at least.

We have no reason to think O'Brien was to blame for any bad picks, or responsible for the good ones either.

I was amazed at the draft last year. Anyone else watch them like I do?

They were allowed to take cameras into the War Rooms this last year, and on a limited basis, the year before.

What blew me away was the shots they had of the Patriots War Room. They would bring up a guys name (no idea who, because they didn't have mics that loud) and some kid would find his binder and pass it around. BINDER!

Shit you not... no laptops in the room. No databases. I got one quick look at the contents, and it wall all photocopied handwritten notes. No spreadsheets at all.

I was absolutely stunned. The gold standard in the draft, and they were operating the way they did 30 years before. WOW!

I wonder if it has anything to do with how much easier it is to leak information digitally. BB doesn't share jack shit with anyone, it wouldn't surprise me.

Hey guys,

He was hired by the Jaguars in May of 2013, which happened after the 2013 NFL Draft

So the drafts he helped with and scouted for are 2014 and 2015:

1.QB Blake Bortles - 4,400+ Yds and 35 TDs last year
2.WR Marquise Lee - Often injured, not productive
2.WR Allen Robinson - Pro Bowler
3.OG Brandon Linder - Started whole rookie year
4.CB Aaron Colvin - 0 Ints, Nickleback
5.LB Telvin Smith - Starting Weakside LB, over 225 total career tackles
5.DE Chris Smith - Fringe Roster Player
6.C Luke Bowanko - Never Plays
7.RB Storm Johnson - Cut after 1 year

1.DE Dante Folwer - Tore ACL first day of practice
2.RB TJ Yeldon - 12 games 750 Yards, 4.1 avg and 2 TDs
3.OG AJ Cann - Started 13 games
4.S James Sample - Backup
5.WR Rashad Greene - 19 Catches 93 Yards
6.DT Micheal Bennett - Barely played, barely
7.WR Neal Sterling - Never Played
7.TE Ben Koyack - Practice Squad

Team made 5 draft day trades combined.

It's a guy he knew personally and thought highly of when they worked together. His Jags resume isn't what he was hired for because, all in all it wasn't exactly impressive and if it was only a two year gig, not much to go on.

PPR demon!

Haha he took Norman to school that day.

Greene: "Hey Josh, there's catch number 7 baby."
Greene: *Crosses his arms at the wrists and hits them against his pelvic area*
Norman: "Da hell"

LOL! Would go right along with that douche that celebrated a kick return putting the Vikings on the board against Seattle at 35-7.

I am very ashamed to say I work in computer security and IT, and I never once even considered that possibility.

While easier, definitely not impossible. Look at all the military and national secrets that get passed around, even back centuries. It's how USSR got the bomb, and that security was far tighter than anything the NFL teams have in place.

Getting info is one thing. Using it to maximize potential is very different.

Not weighing in one way or the other but they have had terrible drafts. This is a guy he knows and was comfortable with, it is not based on his record with the Jags.

Of course they have, but if this guy was in charge of scouting, he has brought in some nice talent the last couple of years.

Lol. Quit crying. All i meant was that he seemed to have a pretty established title as a scout and if you look at the Jags last couple of drafts, they have brought in some major league talent. I dont know who "his guys" are but their last couple of drafts have been good.
