I have not seen anything on a contract for next season for Leyland. Is there any news on it.

He was voted the best manager in baseball by his coaching peers. Says a lot, no matter what any of us think.

I think Leyland (and managers in general) generally get too much credit and too much heat. It's more about the GM and players than the manager, IMHO. The manager can only play who the GM gives him on the roster, and those players need to execute. This team has a handful of superstars and a lot of AAAA players, so it's no wonder they are Jekyll and Hyde.

I agree. I think the most important thing the manager does is done behind the scenes. Line ups, pitching changes, etc. are just a small part of the job but it's the only thing that we see.

A lot of time, I think the biggest thing the manager can do is manage egos and instill a sense of calm or fire into his team. This isn't a little league team where guys don't understand the game or the fundamentals of how to play it. The manager can only put the guys on the roster into the spots he needs them in, and they have to do the rest.

I don't think he's a bad manager and we certainly could do worse. I just think he over thinks things at times and out manages himself, but I am thankful we have a half way decent manager other than that, take that guy in Boston for example, Valentine I think that guy is an absolute clown..

Leyland is neither great nor horrible.

And the most annoying thing I read on this board is when someone says "Jim keeps giving games away".

Are there times he makes bad/dumb decisions? Yes. Has he ever really given a game away? doubtful.

The fact is I really don't care right now if he's back next season or gone, because managers have much less affect on games than most people think, so no matter if it's Leyland, or Nevin, or Gibson, or whoever manages next season, we will only be as good as our players play and stay healthy.

Horse shit. You're telling me managers/Leyland don't give games away? That's a joke, bud. There have been numerous times when Leyland either sits on his fn hands and doesn't do a thing to counteract what the other manager did.

You're right though, the players play the game and not the skipper, but Leyland has taken opportunities away and he does it a lot.

And what is making a bad/dumb decision by a manager? Isn't that giving a game away? It sure fn is, man...

Jim will be here until he decides he doesn't want to be here anymore. I'd say there is a 99% chance he will still be sitting in that dugout next year since I haven't heard him mention anything about retiring. I could only maybe see him doing that if we happen to win the world series ths year...consider going out a winner.

Wonderful......*sigh*

What was that again, Thumb?? Leyland doesn't give games away?? Bahahahaaaaaaaaa. Phil Coke against the righty and the gino drives in 2 fn runs!!! Phil "the joke" Coke is a SITUATIONAL pitcher vs lefties, BUT fn Leyland leaves him in there!!!

Defend that and tell me it wasn't Leyland's fault.

What are you laughing about?

I never said he didn't do dumb things, in fact...I said HE DID.

But if you think we're losing this game because he let Coke face a RHB [wrongly] then you're sadly mistaken.

Garbage against a garbage pitcher, and our pitcher was putting up batting practice.

But if you want this think this games hinged on 1 AB....I just feel sorry for you.

You know exactly what i'm laughing at.

Good for you that you said Leyland did dumb things as a manager. You agree then?

And of course you feel sorry for me. You know you're wrong. But i never said that idiotic move or non-move by Leyland solely cost them the game. It never helped though...i"ll tell you that...lol. BUT if he brings in a righty in that situation vs Mastrionni, MAYBE the game isn't out of reach like it is now. It's probably closer...no? Maybe even tied

So yeah, i get that the offense is shit, i get Sanchez is garbage and i also get that the Twins pitcher is a joke, but by Leyland being a complete fn retard and sitting on his hands when EVERYBODY on the planet (except Leyland) knew the goomba was getting a hit and making it 5-1....welllllllll

So, don't FEEL sorry for me, bro...it's ok to be wrong on things....i know it's hard. ;)

Well shit Tony...which is it?

Leyland gave this game away or he didn't? Because you said he did, now you're saying that's not what you meant?

You guys responding to the post I made must not have read it well. I'm not now, and never really have defended Leyland, except when he gets blamed for things that are out of a managers control.

That's what this was all about, Managers don;t have the impact on games people think they do.

But if we had the 4 greatest MLB managers as a staff here, we probably are not that far from the record we have now, and that's because outside of Cabrera, Ajax, and Fielder, every single position player and DH we have had has either underperformed or flat out sucked.

Verlander has been Verlander.

Fister was hurt for half a season.

Scherzer and Porcello for the most of the year have had ERA's closer to 5 than 4.

We traded for someone who can't pitch outside of Miami. [bonus his name is Anna belle - tee hee]

Valverde has been terrible, and blow a ton of saves.

Coke forgot how to pitch to RHB's, and in turn is forgetting how to pitch LHB's.

Benoit went from being horrible, to being un-hittable, to every ball that came out of his hands landed in the outfield bleachers.

Dotel is about to apply for S.S.

We have had a smattering of rookies in the bullpen who were impressive at times, and gas cans at others.

We have bench players that would still be bench players in AAA...

And yet were still in a playoff hunt, and I think it has very little to do with the manager, for good or bad.

You stated that it's doubtful that Leyland has EVER gave a game away which is laughable.

Yes, I stated that.

Because Leyland does not hit, Leyland does not pitch.

So for him to give a game away, he would basically have to do something that went well above any pitching or hitting failures the team had.
