Lions' Caldwell: We expected lateral, not Hail Mary

As Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers lined up for one final untimed down Thursday, the Detroit Lions left arguably their best defense against a Hail Mary pass sitting on their bench.

Jim Caldwell said the Lions opted not to use receiver Calvin Johnson as a deep safety on the final play of the Packers' miraculous 27-23 victory Thursday because they were concerned about Green Bay running a lateral.

"In that situation we have a couple different things that we do," Caldwell said. "That was one where you're kind of looking for more of that pass back and forth kind of thing because of the range. He ran around there so long, moved up, gave himself a chance to get it in the end zone. We had plenty of guys back there. We had of plenty guys, we just didn't make the play. They did."

Aaron Rodgers completed a 61-yard Hail Mary pass to tight end Richard Rodgers for the game-winning touchdown, ending the Lions' three-game winning streak and essentially snuffing out their faint playoff hopes.

While Rodgers' heave actually was intended for Davante Adams - "It's written in the playbook that my job is to box out and Davante is supposed to jump and I'm supposed to wait for a tip," Richard Rodgers said after the Lions committed several tactical errors on defense that let the play develop downfield.

Detroit rushed just three defenders: Devin Taylor, Haloti Ngata and Jason Jones. They used sack leader Ziggy Ansah to cover the sideline on the short side of the field, far from the line of scrimmage. And they failed to protect the front of the end zone as Richard Rodgers backpedaled into position to catch the pass while surrounded by six Lions defenders.

"We weren't in position to get our hands on it," Caldwell said. "He was in a little bit better position than we were."

The Lions have used the 6-foot-5 Johnson occasionally on defense over the years in similar Hail Mary-type situations, where his big body, long arms and jumping ability can be a factor.
Last year, in Caldwell's first season as Lions coach, Johnson played one defensive snap in a Week 15 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

But Caldwell was in no mood to second guess his decision to keep Johnson on the bench for the game-deciding play Thursday.

"I know there's a lot of things that they'll say, 'Hey, why didn't you do this or that?'" Caldwell said. "And there's always been hindsight and that kind of stuff that you look at it and there's probably a number of things that we could look at someone could come up with a little different idea. But the fact of the matter is, I'm proud of the way our guys played. They played tough, we were ready for a big game and I think we played that way up until all of about a couple flashes of that ballgame."

Lions' Taylor: I didn't grab Rodgers' facemask

Almost two months to the day that they lost a Monday night game to the Seattle Seahawks on a disputed no call, the Detroit Lions find themselves embroiled in another officiating controversy.

Devin Taylor was flagged for a facemask penalty on Aaron Rodgers late in the Green Bay Packers' dramatic 27-23 victory Thursday, but the defensive end said - and replays seemed to confirm - that he did not grasp and twist Rodgers' facemask.

The penalty gave the Packers, who trailed by two points at the time, one untimed play from the 39-yard line, and Rodgers completed a 61-yard Hail Mary to Richard Rodgers for the game-winning score.

"My personal opinion, I don't think I did (grab his facemask)," Taylor said. "I mean, whatever the ref saw, he called, so there's nothing I can do other than just keep playing at that point."

With 6 seconds left, the Packers ran a lateral play on third-and-10 from their own 21-yard line.

Aaron Rodgers threw a short pass down the left sideline to James Jones, who pitched the ball to Richard Rodgers, who threw it back to Aaron Rodgers near the Green Bay 25.

As Taylor chased Rodgers on what looked like the game-ending play, his right thumb struck the center of Rodgers' facemask before he pulled the quarterback down by his shoulder pads.

Two officials threw penalty flags on the play, and the Packers were awarded one untimed down from their 39-yard line.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell echoed Taylor in saying he did not think the play deserved to be penalized.

"Didn't think it was," Caldwell said. "But because you don't think it was or I don't think it was, it was called so therefore it is. And we just got to find a way to make a play."

The NFL did not comment directly on the call when asked by email, but pointed to a tweet sent out by NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino after the game.

"Hand up to the mask, quick grab with finger and head gets turned," Blandino wrote. "At full speed official is going to make that call almost every time."

The Lions (4-8) lost a Week 5 game to the Seattle Seahawks when Calvin Johnson lost a fumble out of the back of the end zone with less than two minutes to play.

Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright knocked the loose ball out of the back of the end zone for a touchback, but the NFL said Wright should have been penalized for intentionally batting the ball.

Had Wright been penalized, the Lions would have retained possession inside the 1-yard line, down 13-10.

Caldwell said he did not ask for or receive any explanation from referee Carl Cheffers about Thursday's penalty.

"When have you ever heard that do any good, for you to ask for verification?" Caldwell said. "If you ask for it on the field, what is it going to do for them? What are they going to say?

"They can't change the flag once they've thrown it. They're not going to change it."

No expecting a hail Mary is proof enough the Jimmy Caldwell needs to be sent packing. The guy is a zombie during games never making proper adjustment never going for the kill like in SD and last night when his team had 21-3 and 20-0 leads. But beyond his worst quality is he never works the officials.. I am tired of this type of coaching not looking for every advantage for his team..

Hopefully any talk of keeping him around is gone by now.

I will gladly ditch this team if he's still around next year.

I am just beyond words.. Caldwell is a freaking in game zombie when it comes to coaching...ErGHHHHHH I am so pissed off.. Oh well Just wait another year I guess.

LOOKing for the lateral!!!!!!!

It really would be fun to have a coach with some sideline passion that works officials makes adjustments and crushes a team when they have them beat like SD and green bay. we so went conservative up 17-0 and 20-0 it was frustrating..

Caldwell lol what a blithering idiot

We thought they'd try the same thing from 15 yards closer.. May gawd Martha the guy is a moron

Watch that facemask call closer and you see Rodgers head was already turned toward his right shoulder as he was looking to his right while trying to dodge the tackle. The refs completely missed this and the fact the NFL is backing them up is complete BS.

Why is it crews that make mistakes in non-Lions games get less support and actually get disciplined in some fashion, but with the Lions it is just constantly considered acceptable to screw up?

If Martha doesn't fire Caldwell after this I would be shocked. Up by 20 and you lose due to being conservative? After her prior firing bananza, I don't see how Caldwell can consider his job safe.

Don't have your hand up near his head, take all doubt away from the officials. He can't throw the ball forward, there's no one within 20 yards of him, and there are two Lions players surrounding him. Why do you need to try and grab his face?

Boomer Esiason on Jim Rome show today.

"In real time it looked like a flag but on review it wasn't".
Use replay in last 2 minutes of games to get it right.

'Also both players were playing the ball so the it was the correct
call in not throwing the flag for interference on that play".

Just sweet news.. Lions get jobbed again by Refs.
Can we get a coach who puts teams away...

I wouldn't have been shocked if his answer was "we expected a draw play"....the guy is just clueless.

Horrible in-game coach. There's no defending it.

Jimmy's gotta go. Playing the lateral? Holy fuck

Well, it worked for the Packers the play before right?

Caldwell expected the Packers would keep lateralling and getting the ball back to Rodgers, who would keep on getting face masked, until they had moved the ball into field goal range.

The mindboggling incompetent decision making skills he possesses late in games never ceases to amaze me. This assclown had a chance to put Green Bay away and not rely on them to lose it themselves. That's the difference between Caldwell and an actual coach that's a winner.

Belicheck would run up 50points and laugh through the whole 4th quarter but this asshole immediately goes into a shell with any type of lead. If he hadn't been so conservative, the refs wouldn't have been in a position to job the team again, and he would never have been in the position to look like an unqualified idiot of a coach at the end of the game. Fuck Jim Caldwell.

Lol heard on 105.1 that someone tweeted something to the effect of, "Lions should have put Ebron out there, he can't catch the ball anyway he would have knocked it down."
