Bell was a pro bowler and Coleman would be our best player in the secondary. We all would kill for these safeties. I never said they were superstars. Just that good safeties can be had after the second. Your lack of reading comprehension is much more sad.

Id have to say a safety has a skill set that can more readily be found in the later rounds and still be productive. Whereas a solid starting cb needs to be highly skilled and theres not as many avail per draft. Especially if that safety has a particular skill set for your team....like a guy that can run and cover half a field and gets drafted into the tampa 2. Or if a team plays their safety in the box a lot to help with run support. Id like to think most NFL caliber safeties can run with a TE....but cover skills are usually the difference between being a 1st rd S and a 3rd rd S. The drop off in talent is the most noticeable at the CB position imo. Which is why it drives me nuts when the lions keep picking the Stanley wilsons and Bentleys of the world. LB, oline, S you can usually get quality starters in rd 3. Starters you need a high lvl of skill to be successful id think youd want to draft in rd 1....CB, WR, QB, DE. Unless youre Adrian Peterson you shouldn't be drafted in rd 1 if your a rb imo....its all about your oline and them opening a lane to run through....theres countless late round RBs that are successful in the league due to quality run blocking olines or scheme. The positions where its critical that you beat your guy to be successful or you cant let them beat you seem to hold more value. DE and CB on defense for example.....oh....g....the lions currently have 0 starters at those 2 positions /facepalm

Bell went to the Pro Bowl as a Superbowl replacement....and 2 of the guys listed were very high 3rd round picks.

Corners and Safeties are slim and far between after round 2 more then any other positions on the field.

Goldson...I'd kill for

I'd kill for Goldson too. We need that type of safety in run support in the wide 9 scheme.

Bartell did great matched up against B. Marshal in the last game of the season. Next year we'll have a unique situation at corner if we resign Houston. Houston is better suited for the burners of the league, Harvin, Cobb, ect. and Bartell is a big physical corner who matches up well against the Marshals of the league. That's why I see our biggest need at safety and wouldn't mind us drafting 2 safeties, one in the earlier rounds like Kenny Vaccaro in the 1st round, Jonathan Cyprien or Matt Elam in the 2nd, and a later round guy like Zeke Motta in the 4th round.

If we have to count on bartell next year.....were fucked. Mayhew needs to get off his ass and go sign someone.

id rather overpay for a has been like DRC than count on Bartell lol.

We don't have the ability to overpay. I know Bartell has a track record of being below average and who knows if that was scheme or coaching related, but the sample size of him shutting down Marshal in the last game of the season just stuck with me. Some of the passes that Marshal did catch against him were perfectly placed balls that no one was going to prevent. We should just pay Houston and draft a safety and depth to prevent another setback like last year.

if we make all the moves we should make....we will have plenty of money to sign a cb.

So you think our money is better spent at one position when both of your starting DEs and OLBs are FA, while also replacing RT, RG, and C. We also don't have any safeties either, Speivey's career is over and Delmas has yet to play a full season. I see a 13-3 season if we could just fix that one position....

I never said we should spend all of our money on a cb. But does this sound like the kind of guy we should count on:

Bartell was signed to a one-year contract worth $3 million in the offseason after missing all but one game in 2011 with St. Louis because of two neck fractures.

Bartell began the season as the starter but broke his left shoulder blade in the season opener. He returned to the lineup Nov. 11 in Baltimore and started the past five games, playing 95 percent of the defensive snaps. For the year, Bartell allowed 18 catches on 28 throws in his direction for 295 yards and four touchdowns, according to Pro Football Focus. He had no interceptions.

He was benched briefly in the first half on Dec. 2 against Cleveland before returning in the second half when Phillip Adams sustained a concussion.

ummmm.....ya.....none of that is good lol. These are the current positions we have no starters signed: RT, RG, DE, DE, OLB, OLB, CB, CB, S, S. We also probably need a speed back and a WR. Getting 2 safeties does not mean we end up with 13 wins lmao. We need to fill as many of those holes as possible if we even want to sniff 7 wins. With our current roster and the upcoming schedule.....were currently the worst team in the league. Mayhew has a shit ton of work to do just to make us respectable in 13'. Trying to roll with no secondary vs Rodgers and Cutler has been the dumbest strategic move ive ever seen by a GM. Its about time we get some cbs.

There's only so many holes you can fill through the draft and with us being in the cap situation that we are, its not in our best interest to spend a huge percentage of it on corner. Safeties are our biggest need, not corners considering that we didn't do to bad against teams with the guys we rolled out last year. We were in position to beat GB, Indy, TN, and Texans with better Safety play with the guys we had last year.

safeties don't cost jack....you can sign/draft a starting safety and resign delmas then youre done with that position and you move on to the other 10 holes you have on the team. We pick enough round 2 busts....we cant afford to add delmas to that list of failed rd 2 picks. Our current starting defense is:

W Young Suh Fairley R Lewis
Whitehead Tulloch T Lewis
Bentley Bartell
Silva Wendling

aka....the worst defense in the world...ever. Go get Goldson and Ed Reed and this is still the worst defense on the planet.
