DETROIT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 20 USCHO.com, NR USA Today/USA Hockey) earned the program's 15th Great Lakes Invitational championship on Friday (Dec. 30) with a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 14 Michigan State at Joe Louis Arena. With 8:16 left in the 20-minute extra frame, defenseman Kevin Clare (New Rochelle, N.Y.) put the puck past MSU goaltender Drew Palmisano for the game-winner.

After 30-plus scoreless minutes of hockey to start the game, the Spartans broke the deadlock as Tanner Sorenson netted his first goal of the season. Sorenson perfectly placed a wrist shot past Michigan goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) to give Michigan State the 1-0 lead.

The lead lasted until the 10:11 mark of the third period when forward Derek DeBlois (Narragansett, R.I.) knotted the score at one goal apiece with his fourth tally of the season. However, the tie did not hold long -- just 2:20 to be exact -- and Michigan State re-took the lead on a Brett Perlini marker.

The Wolverines battled back and, with a power play and Hunwick pulled for a 6-on-4 advantage, Michigan tied the game at two on Kevin Lynch's (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) fourth goal of the season at the 18:59 mark of the third. The Wolverines closed out regulation by outshooting MSU 24-3 in the third period.

The teams headed to the dressing room with a 20-minute overtime looming. Michigan State had several early chances in OT with Hunwick coming up with clutch saves for the Wolverines. Hunwick made 23 saves in the win, while the Wolverines solved Palmisano three times on 48 shots.

Clare was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and was joined on the all-tournament team by Wolverines David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) and A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

Michigan returns to action on Friday (Jan. 6) when it hosts Lake Superior State at Yost Ice Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The Wolverines out shot MSU 24-3 in the third period, and here I was complaining about getting shots on goal earlier in the game...
