Mittens Says 47% Americans He Wont Worry About

I once did so much math and science they let me wear a robe and a funny hat.

Me too Red, but in my case it included math, but had more to do with how much computers and electronics that I "did". I also got a couple extra funny ribbons to go with the robe and funny hat. :*)

That's a boatload of words to put in someone's mouth. Past the pissing off part, you got very little right. You are assuming what I meant, when I said "making it better". You know nothing.

In no particular order of importance, these are some things I do, small but I did qualify it with "what I can do":
1) I recycle relentlessly.
2) Even though I could drive a much bigger car, my main get-around-town car is a Corolla. If the technology gets better, and the price comes down a lot, I will probably get an electric car too.
3) I vote in every election, Local, State, and Federal.
4) I ran for the schoolboard, but the winner was a THuL in a liberal district, like you and champ. (Tree-hugging liberal) for the uninitiated. :*)
5) When I am going to church, I take part as cantor, Eucharistic minister, and have held a number of other positions throughout my life. If you don't know how that could make "things" better, you must not read my posts.
6) I take part and volunteer for charities every chance I get. I donate money and time to the Boys and Girls Scouts, Hospice, March of Dimes, and a number of others.
7) I am working to make the world's airports more secure (little by little - doing what I can). That is actually what I do for a living.
8) I support Wounded Warriors, and if I could donate more time, it would be to this amazing group.
9) I am constantly reading, trying to determine why people I disagree with are so adamant about their position. If it is just "spat back talking points", I give that crap the time it deserves.
10) I pay my fair share of taxes no matter what you think. I don't knowingly cheat on my income or even exaggerate my deductions - I believe that is just plain wrong.

There are others, but stopping here gets my point across. I will match what I do to make things better, with many of the posters here. Notice I said MANY - we can always do more.

Republican ideology does NOT preclude one from doing whatever they can to make things better. It also does not mean, when considering what people less well off are going through, you can't show compassion and concern, even if not able to physically help. I aspire to be tolerant and non-judgemental

. . . as I said. I DO WHAT I CAN. Do you get it now?

Probably not, but hey I tried.

If you want to leave, then leave - I am staying - even in the case of an Obama win, or even a total financial collapse.

You do much more than i do. A real conservative republican would look at your list and call you a welfare president that rapes the rich only to help the needy and then would damn you for it.

Ill give you props though....i dont have that type of motivation and just plain dont like people enough to help as much as you do :D

my church would be awesome. It would be tastefully decorated, without any of the garishness present in the temples and such of other religions.

I'd stand up in the front, and read short statements of common sense, logic and reason in my calm monotone voice. We'd listen to some chill music, and I would pour everyone a glass of wine, or an IPA, joking that I had transformed it from water. We'd all laugh at how silly you'd have to be to believe something like that.

After the ceremonial "drinking and mocking the fools in other religions" was complete, people could petition me for advice on problems they were having.

Then I'd have them come visit me in my law office and pay a retainer, and in return, I'd advise them. It would be a tax free front for the business.

a shade more honest than any other religion at least. And my advice would be useful, unlike the BS you hear from those clowns in robes with funny hats.

so you have no doubt the bible is some sort of fictional novel?

At Ohio State, you can get a robe and funny hat for playing football.

it's more historical fiction. there is evidence that some of those people lived; for example, there were Egyptians, there was a Pharaoh, there were Hebrews. Babylon, the Philistines, Assyria, etc. etc. all supported by the historical record. The Romans existed, and there are records supporting the existence of Herod, and Pontius Pilate.

but parting the Red Sea? Angels striking down entire armies? Changing water to wine, and rising from the dead? Get real, man. This is the 21st century.

Well to me people are the most important thing. I really truly buy into the platitude that all men are created equal.

I am motivated by that more than anything - I can't in good conscious say that my ideals always mesh with real conservative Republicans, but it doesn't change the fact that I am a traditionalist and a conservative in many areas. Where they go against individuals, is where we part ways a bit.

It is very true that I had a multitude more opportunities than many minorities and poorer folks, so giving back is very important. I personally would rather see us really help people who did not get the same opportunities I had, to have a chance at them, and then let them choose to take them. Provide more school choices, health care choices, job choices, trade training, housing, etc., but not so sure that it all should be handed out for free. Having to work for it is a good thing.

I know - way oversimplfied, but we don't have the space for a thorough analysis.

Anyway - far afield of leaving or staying in this country. It irks me some when everyone thinks were "fucked" either way. I say far from it - and that is my opinion.

I once did so much math and science they let me wear a robe and a funny hat.

when you were wearing it, did you speak any decrees to slack-jawed yokels? Issue any fatwas? Hold an inquisition and torture non-believers to death? Collect tithes? Cover up and enable child abuse?

if not, then we're not talking about the same thing.

This was in response to MHughes. Should have quoted it. Oh well.

Have a nice weekend all. Go blue (or green if that is your persuasion) - coming soon to a Houston sports bar Saturday at 4:00 PM :*)

Well, I didn't wear it for very long. It was a rental.

Well I can tell you collecting tithes is super important. I am still collecting them to this day.

Covering up bad things is really not a tenet of many religions - gotta deny that one.

Still thinking about those decrees to slack-jawed yokels - I'll have to think about it and let you know.

Wouldn't you consider having to read my posts to get to the "good" ones tortuous to you? Would that be considered torturing non-believers to death?

Issued something similar to fatwas to my child - does that count?

What about the City of Troy, and Ulysses?

Is there historic evidence that Troy and Ulysses existed?

My last time I didn't have to pay; my 8th Grade home room class was "graduating" onto high school, so the school provided me the robe and the funny hat at no charge.

Cool sash, too.

Yes.

It's a historical record of the entire 6000 years the earth has been around.

Specifically, it mentions the birth of the human race, all descended from a single man and woman,...who only had two sons....wait a second......WTF!

covering up bad things may not be a tenet, but it's done, so no excuse using semantics like that

if you are issuing fatwas to your child while wearing a robe and a funny hat, then you should found a religion, like me. mine sounds better though. yours doesn't sound very lucrative.

I believe so in the case of Troy.

but that's neither here, nor there, since no one used Homer's Odyssey to found a religion, and do all sorts of dumb shit in its name.

I always wondered the last part.

in my school, whenever kids asked the teacher about that one, they were met with rambling, incoherent explanations about not taking every little thing literally, even though on the whole the bible was the authoritative source of everything in our dumb religion.

you'd think along the years some "biblical scholar" in the catholic church would've caught that glaring hole in the narrative and added a little something about god creating a couple more womenfolk or something when he saw Cain and Abel start lusting after Eve. maybe they could've colluded with the Rabbis to make sure they tied up the loose ends in the talmud too.

I know you been exposed to the information that the Catholic Church accepts evolution. I recently read that people that feel good about themselves are more able to accept facts that defy their biases.
