OT: R.I.P. Daron

Sorry about the loss of your friend, Vic. Really sad news and like Champ said, he sounded like a good one.

Condolences my friend.

Another example of only the good die young. Sorry for your loss.

how sad...three kids and they lose their mom a few years ago and now their dad kills himself. I don't think I will ever understand what could be going through someone's mind to do that to their kids. It must be something that's unbearable. Those poor kids.

I have had a couple of friends who struggled with it. One of them told me he couldn't leave his bed some days... It was like he was paralyzed. It's an actual illness, man.

Yes, it's an illness. My brother tried for years, and eventually he succeeded. He was only 41. Sometimes the demons get a hold and don't let go. I wish my brother was here but gives me comfort knowing he's at peace.

I wasn't trying to minimize it...it's just difficult for me to understand how it could get that bad.

I have a friend who's a psychiatrist and he explained it to me this way (way oversimplifying it, but I thought it was helpful to understand): the brain is a computer. if your computer isn't working right, it's either a "software problem," or a "hardware problem."

software problems are mental issues, like traumatic memories, behavioral disorders, etc.

hardware problems are physical problems with the brain, like a traumatic brain injury or low dopamine or serotonin levels.

clinical depression - ie not just "a bad mood" - is more a "hardware problem" where your dopamine levels are just too low to allow your brain to function correctly.

and I guess the complications come in treating it because everyone's brain is so different that the causes and effectiveness of treatments would be different for everyone. and some people react to treatments and get worse.

Hey Mitch, as a Mod would you please edit my Topic and remove his last name? In retrospect, I don't want any Google searches to pick up on our discussion (not that its likely, but still).

anger is certainly part of a situation like this especially when you think about the kids ...like, how could you?!

I've got very direct experience with similar situations/issues and there are a lot of angles. 'perception is reality in the eye of the beholder' is a quote I think of when trying to be empathetic to anyone's specific situation. you never fully know and in life, there really is only one true thing we can control..

From what I've read, it's really unfortunate there's such a stigma toward depression, since - unlike some disorders like borderline personality disorder, or narcissistic personality disorder - people who are depressed recognize they have a problem and want to get better, and that makes it easier to treat in many cases, and recover from. fortunately I think that's starting to change.
