Get StartedWhy are there so many homeless people in California? there are a lot here in Houston too, and that number has only increased over the last 4 years, judging by the size of the encampments. In Austin, TX, the size of the encampments under the freeway a couple blocks from downtown bars and restaurants needs to be seen to be believed.
Must be socialism.
no, it's the far right, uber-capitalistic policies of mayors like Garcetti and Lee and their uber capitalist City Councils and the Gavin Newsome's and their conservative cronies at the state level. Same with the folks who run Austin - it's all unfettered capitalism. Oh, and all those uber conservative judges who make it next to impossible for law enforcement to take action against homeless people setting up camp (doing drugs, defecating, threatening and robbing residents) on public land wherever they feel like it.
ah, so build more prisons, and house them in cages for the rest of their lives. very christian attitude from you.

Get off your couch and stage photo ops, like me!
Ha, ha.
Sheriff Villanueva is a technically a politician - he was duly elected sheriff by the electoral ?brain trust? of LA County - but he?s the furthest thing from a photo op politician one could find; the only good decision we?ve collectively made in a while.
He?s a registered Democrat, I think - you pretty much have to be a Democrat to get on the ballot in LA County - and every other elected politician (Democrat) here hates him.
You might have observed that the Republicans I have liked have also generally been the ones most hated by their fellow party mates.
Yeah, in big cities, the labels don't matter; Chicago Machine Democrats were largely indistinguishable from Republicans on just about every issue. Nowadays, they feign being "woke" because it allows them to distance themselves from their GOP counterparts, even though on economic issues - ie what matters - they're identical.
Anyways, to me the scam is clear.
the rich looked at the pie in 1970 and decided they wanted a bigger cut.
to that end, they pushed policies cutting corporate taxes, and the high marginal rates they paid, and also any social spending that didn't benefit them.
Since then we've seen the result. But because all along, these people never stopped fucking whining about taxes and social programs, they can claim that these social problems - like increasing widespread homelessness - aren't the result of the policies they've been supporting, and getting, since 1980z
The rates in the tax code don't lie. The rich, and the politicians they own do.
just curious...what do you consider "rich"?
I don't think you can put a dollar amount on it. It's really a matter of "do you have enough money that you don't have to work for a living?"
.

so is it just Chicago or is it your contention that state and local level California Democrats are more like Republicans than they are progressives? Some evidence of that would be nice, particularly for Los Angeles and San Francisco and anywhere else where homeless camps have exploded in size over the last decade.
Also, is it your contention that entitlement spending since 1970 has gone down? I'm not sure how it's been cut since it's significantly higher both in terms of dollars and % of the budget. Government spending as a percentage of GDP has also increased significantly since 1970 and is currently near all time highs...
facts suck, don't they?
