In Austin, TX, the size of the encampments under the freeway a couple blocks from downtown bars and restaurants needs to be seen to be believed.

Same with the folks who run Austin - it's all unfettered capitalism. Sheriff Villanueva is a technically a politician - he was duly elected sheriff by the electoral ?brain trust? of LA County - but he?s the furthest thing from a photo op politician one could find; the only good decision we?ve collectively made in a while.

He?s a registered Democrat, I think - you pretty much have to be a Democrat to get on the ballot in LA County - and every other elected politician (Democrat) here hates him.

You might have observed that the Republicans I have liked have also generally been the ones most hated by their fellow party mates.

If you can spend millions of dollars every year funding political action committees that lobby politicians to cut your taxes, you're rich.

Allowing individuals to accumulate that sort of power within a democracy makes it not a democracy. Or a lot less of a democracy.

Government spending as a percentage of GDP has also increased significantly since 1970 and is currently near all time highs...
