Pope: financial market are a tyranny

We used to switch phone carriers all the time in college b/c they were paying $50-$100 to do it. We'd get a keg from Bill's with the $$ and do it again a month later

I think my roommate got a check by agreeing to let them change his service when we were in the dorms. Then when they couldn't switch him , they sent him an apology.

(Michigan ran the phone service and you had to punch in a code with every long distance call. Roommates got separate bills...I'd forgotten about that until just now)

yeah, I remember that. I had to get my own phone line when I lived in my fraternity as a soph, that was the ameritech deal.

We had a great scam going with BMG. when you signed up for their program, they sent you 12 CDs before you had to pay a cent. someone figured that with so many individual leases in the frat house, we could all sign up under fraudulent names, and they'd never make the effort to track everyone who lived there at one time down and try to bill us.

at one point near the end of the year we were getting a stack of mail almost half a foot high that consistent solely of past due notices. The names on them were hilarious... Jeff Lebowski, Mary Frances Potter, George W. Bush, Jackie Treehorn, Cool H. Luke...

(still have those 24 CDs.)

I had a friend who worked in SQuad's mailroom - a Bulk Address with thousands of students.... He must have pulled that scam so many times - he had 100's of CDs and I think Columbia House stopped shipping at some point..

Man! I used my real name and made the 1 required purchase like a sucker!

We used to use those as a prank in HS in the mid-late 80's. We would go to the library and check out magazines and rip the BMG/RCA music ads out and tape a penny to them and fill out the name of some kid, then pick 12 of the worst [cassettes] ever and have them sent to his home address.

We also did the same with magazine subscription cards, and someone even brought in a bunch from playboy once that we sent off to a bunch of freshman after claiming the person was indeed over 18.

Sadly the every persistent worry of mail fraud kept us from claiming credit.

Yeah, I did the tape club legit - the shipping fees were key to the bottom line..

That and remembering to cancel after buying one CD.

But you couldn't cancel. How they got you was you had to remember to mail in the card saying you DONT want the automatic selection each month, or it was shipped automatically and you were bound by the terms to pay club price for it [usually higher then retail].
