Porcello

2 very good starts so far this year. We can only pray he can keep that going. Let's face it, Porcello and Max are going to be the guys who decide how much success the Tigers can have this year.

My pick before the season in one of these threads to have a break out season. He's looked good so far. Boesch was my other player I thought would step up this year.

Porello really can baffle hitters when he's got that sinker going like he did today. His control at times is Greg Maddux like, he just needs to keep it up for longer stretches of starts.

The biggest thing being overlooked, is Rick went deeeeeeep into the game.

That was his problem last year, this is the most positive sign from today.

Both Porcello and Verlander's starts have gone 7+ innings. Much needed with the others only getting into the sixth and 5th one time! Right now Rick a looking good for a 4th starter.

Porcello got better when he added that changeup.
I don't expect him to be this good every time out. I'd be more-than-happy if Rick won 15-16 - dropped his ERA to 4.0 - his WHIP to 1.31

im hoping for a low/mid 3's ERA and a whip around 1.1 or 1.2. any higher for either wouldnt be much of an improvement.

Considering his era last year was 4.74 and his whip was 1.407 I would consider anything lower then a last year a improvement... I to expected really good things out of Rick this year but and I hope he makes great strides but mid to lower 3's might be asking to much... I hope he does it but right now he looks great..

while this is true, he's done better than last year on both fronts before. im hoping he takes a real step forward this year and sets new career bests.

Porcello looked really good yesterday. He is finally becoming a big league pitcher by being able to control his pitch count and really working the hitters with an array of pitches and placement. Hopefully he can keep it up this year.

Without looking, I believe Rick's first season (2009) saw him produce a (roundabout) 1.34 WHIP.

So I'm not asking for the world here.

So far this year Porcello has improve in the two areas he most needed to, he's maintining velocity deeper into games (no more 88 MPH once he reaches the 6th inning), and he's getting lefties out.

If he can maintain it, a 200 IP, 3.75 ERA season could be attainable.

If he becomes that good, the Tigers will trade him a year prior to free agency. They pretty-much won't be able to afford Rick.
In thinking ahead, hopefully our return on him is just as good.

Agreed. The more he mixes up speeds the better. I like his arsenal of pitches and think he has pretty good control, but he needs that extra element to keep hitters off balance in order to be a consistently good big league pitcher.

I'd love to agree with you but come on, it's been 2 games...

He had a nice first 2 starts, lets just see how he does from here on out.

Personally, I think he's benefitting from pitching in front of Verlander. I've always thought of him as a prototypical 5th pitcher, hopefully they don't move him up in the rotation where he might not be as comfortable.

I'm not sure that's the same as batting in front of Miguel. And I didn't see Penny benefit last season..
