I would rather we replace internally. 99% of closers are not Mariano Rivera. Valverde has been one of the most combustible relievers since we got him, he was perfect on saves one year and pulled from the rotation the next. That's just how relievers work. Save the payroll, promote some of these big arms on the farm to a one inning role. If we can't make it work internally, we can make minor trades during the season.

Soriano would be a great addition, lets not kid ourselves.

The problem is going to be cost, but if Mr. I wants to spend it, I'll welcome him.

I don't think Rondon is ready to be our closer yet, and if anyone even thinks the name 'Phil Coke' they deserve to be beaten senseless.

We could use Soriano, one could actually go as far as to say we need someone like him, but he won't be cheap.

While this would obviously be a great pick up I have never been a big fan of spending a lot of money on a closer. He has already turned down 14 million from the Yankees. Someone I like and I haven't seen much mention of is J P Howell. He shouldn't cost too much and he has closer experience. I think they can use spring training to determine who are closer is. They can choose from about 5 different options

It is alot of money for Soriano, or any closer.
Stranger moves have happened.

and....
I would be surprised if Rondon was the closer.
Leyland always wants an experienced/veteran reliever to close.

As much as anyone might say, but he throws as hard as Zumaya did, Joel never had success when they tried him. and the last 1 or 2 outings Rondon got lit up in the AFL.

I do hope he makes the bullpen and can pitch the 7th and maybe some 8th innings in lower leverage situations.

I'd rather sign Soria for one year (with a 2nd year team option) and throw him in the bullpen. Its as much of a gamble as signing soriano for the 3+ he will most likely command.

iirc Soria had TJ surgery. not sure on his timetable return.
but he would be a less expensive signing.

I could definitely see this happening. I think we're out on Sanchez at his current asking price, so I could see us moving ahead with Smyly and Porcello in the rotation, getting a premier closer, and kicking the tires on a LF if one makes sense. We could always swing a trade at the deadline to tweak the rotation if necessary.

Angels say they are not signing Zack Greinke...Hey how about us!!!!

One thing I know, the Tigers organization does not have a closer for 2013 presently. They need to get one, two options: Get a realiable but expensive one or take a chance on a cheaper one who has no experience as a closer. Option 2 sucks.

If MI wants to spend 200m on 2013 who am i to argue.

IMO, it would be extremely risky to go into the season without an expierienced closer. Not my money, sign him up Mike!
