Right on Q. Up 3-1 playing desipline hockey wings give up a goal with 5 minutes left. Bullcrap non call on islanders also helped in the breakaway .. but wings just has to be smarter darn it.

Empty net time. .no call on interference on helm. He would have gotten to the puck easily first ...Refs are awful tonight.

Helm blows by islanders to get to the puck first and pass it to Glendening.

Wings weird home and away season contunues.7-1 for the month of January on the road. Marek is 7-1-1 last nine and I think they said all wins were on the road.

JA heading to the Carribian for the all-star break.

49 games down, 33 games to go. The all-star break is over. The Wings are 20th in the league in goals scored per game. That's not a lot of offense. Mrazek is very good with a record 18-9-4 (40 of 62 pts) as starting goalie. Mrazek's save% .932 is nice, apparently #2 in the NHL!! Larkin is making a splash as rookie.

There is a 3-way tie for 2nd place in the Atlantic Division, and the tie will be broken tomorrow as the Wings face the Lightning. I'm not sure this particular game is that important. Overall, the Wings just need to step it up in offense for the season. They don't really have one dynamic forward, but somebody steps up and scores. Larkin obviously contributing quite a bit in goals, assists. They have got to win a few games by 2 or 3 goals to impress me. That's what dominating teams do.

I don't think this is a dominating team, nor should we expect it to be. This is really a transitioning team. We have the young forwards to start the next generation in Hockeytown, but they all still need seasoning. We also probably need to look for or develop (Mantha, perhaps) a sniper on the wing.

The defense could also use some serious work, though some of this is schematic and holding the young guys accountable for back-checking. We give up a ton of shots per game. If Mrazek wasn't one of the best goalies in the league this year, the defense would be getting a lot more attention.

At this point I will be happy simply to make the playoffs and see what the team can do. We shouldn't expect much more than that, as this team simply is not comparable to the dominant seasons of the past.

That is the problem with Ken Holland. That is all he cares about is "making the playoffs." Get bounced in Rd. 1, wash, rinse, and repeat. The wings are going to have to actually go through a full rebuild if they ever want to contend again. If that means missing the playoffs for a couple years then so be it. Putting bandaids on bullet holes isn't working anymore.

What? How does that make sense? Firstly, what could Holland have done different that would make you think he's more win now? He has spent big when he had the money. He hasn't made huge trades, but what huge trades were available.

Second, how does bottoming out help? The Wings have drafted better with playoff picks than most teams do with top five picks. They still have a great farm system despite graduating several top 6 forwards to the nhl. Bottoming out hasn't exactly turned around most of those teams at the bottom.

Yea , you have a clue . The wings have been "rebuilding" while staying competitive . What more could you want ? Oh you want to gut the entire team for god knows what reason and start from scratch ? LOL yea great plan buddy

We have a great combination of young and veteran talent and Mrazek s stepping up to be a #1 goalie , imo we got a well rounded team . Don't know what team you have been watching .

What team I have been watching? A team that is far from contending for another cup. Datysuk could still be elite if he actually had good linemates, but he doesn't. Zetterberg is a shell of his former self. Tatar and Nyquist are way too inconsistent. They will play well for stretches and then disappear for 10 games. The defensive core is a joke outside of Dekeyser and Green. I agree that Larkin and Mrazek are the future of this team, but who else do you have when Datsyuk and Zetterberg are done? We have to hope that Mantha and Athanasiou turn out to be studs.

I guess you missed how many decent guys the team has in grand rapids. To do as well as we gave where we have drafted is amazing. Go ask Edmonton how fun it is to bottom out.. they went 5-2 in Stanley cups from 1982-83 season to the 2005-06 season and have had only 2 winning seasons since Thier last appearance in the cup finals and have missed the playoffs 9 years running..that is a ton of bottomming out draft picks .

I'm talking about the future of this team, not the past. Yes it was incredible that datsyuk and zetter berg turned out to be diamonds in the rough. This current team is not very good. They struggle badly to score goals and the defensive core just isn't good enough. This 10 game stretch coming out of the break will make or break this team. A 3 or 4 game losing streak and this team is in trouble.

Edmontons problem is they had young kids mentoring young kids with no veteran leadership at all.

M. You can't have it both ways.Edmonton did bottom out like you want the wings to do and i surely wish we would win more cups but I feel the wings are really closer then you think. Pretty amazing what they have done.
