Another great Michigander goes down. She wasn't that old (76) but according to wikipedia was a long time smoker, and had a drinking problem. Then weight problems when she quit smoking, and cancer on top of that.

Sad day for all of us from Detroit. "The Queen Of Soul" Aretha Franklin has left us at age 76.

She had a God given beautiful voice that was one of the if not the greatest of all-time.

With her roots in Gospel, I remember when she first came on the scene, as all my friends and I heard her for the first time.

There was the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, all the greats, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Sam and Dave, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Jr. Walker and The All-Stars, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Martha and The Vandellas, etc.
but finally this young woman from our 'Motor City' came on the scene, and rose to the top as the most gifted of all the female singers.

Sad day for all of us who remember her, and those of us who heard her in later years as an icon of the music industry.

RIP Aretha.
On this day, Elvis Presley passed away, and also Babe Ruth.

So today the Queen of Soul joins the King, and the Sultan of Swat.

For most people who live past 76 life gets pretty shitty. Even though I don’t really believe in God I wake up and fall to sleep praying every day that I don’t live that long.

I went to see her at her annual Christmas concert in 1989-I think her guest was Peabo Bryson

I went with this hot chick whom I had a grabbed and kissed On an airplane before we had even actually ever said hello.

Within a week or so later she and I went together to the Rose Bowl, it was Bo’s last game as Michigan’s head coach.

So that’s my Aretha Franklin story.

Think was probably my favorite song of hers. Say a little Prayer as Well. Great voice.

That's more of a hot chick story than an Aretha story.. ;-)

I really don?t have any stories that aren?t hot chicks stories.

If I had banged Aretha when I was six years old I guess that would?ve been both a hot chick story and an Aretha story? But I didn?t.

I remember her from Blues Brothers.

Not a fan of soul/R&B or gospel music.

You strike me as more of an "8 Track Era" "Dad Rock" kinda guy.

We'll be here to console you when the guys from REO Speedwagon, Loggins & Messina, Hall & Oates, and Steely Dan all pass.

I won?t be.

I expect I?ll be dead before all of them.

Do we need to have a suicide watch for Tinsel?

Not in the least - although I am a little morbid right now; my dear sweet darling dog of 14 years came to her time just two weeks ago and I am kind of down about that.

But no, I would imagine I'll go the way or Charlie Harper; liver failure or venereal disease or some crazy bitch will throw me in front of a subway in Paris, or yet - fake that death and hold me in a dungeon in Sherman Oaks for four years until I escape, collect a two million dollar check and head back to my Malibu beach house, only to have Chuck Lorre drop my piano on me from a helicopter, moments after which he'll drop a piano on himself.

you watch too much TV

Does Dr. Ben Carson, now the Secretary of HUD, incise too many children?s skulls?

Because I?ve never incised a single one.

I?ll leave the child skull insicions to Dr. Carson, and I?ll stick with watching TV.

Hair metal then? Dokken, Def Leppard, Motley Cr?e, Great White, etc.? Ronnie James Dio?

nope. I pretty much listen to XM radio. Last night we were listening to Lithium (90's Alternative/grunge), Pop Rocks (Rock & Pop from the '90's & 2Ks) & Y2country (country from 2000's)

I'm not a huge music fan but when I listen to music in the car or on the deck I seem to gravitate towards those three stations. My wife has a much broader range of muisc...much of which I don't care for.
