Basketball legend Bill Walton, who led the UCLA Bruins to two national titles before winning two championships during his NBA career, has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

The NBA issued a statement saying Walton died Monday while surrounded by his family.

"Bill Walton was truly one of a kind," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position. His unique all-around skills made him a dominant force at UCLA and led to an NBA regular-season and Finals MVP, two NBA championships and a spot on the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams.

RIP

Bill Walton was a great BB player and if not for his health with knee and back issues would have had an even greater career. All Celtics fans were thrilled when he came to the team for the '85-'86 Championship Celtics as the backup to Parish and to be able to play with Bird and McHale. It was a joy to watch a healthy Walton as the sixth man off the bench. He scored, passed, and played defense at a high level when healthy, which was basically a two year stretch with Portland when they won an NBA title, and one of his two years with the Celtics. I had friends who loved the Grateful Dead but not as much as Bill Walton.
RIP, Big Red. The ‘86 championship wouldn’t have been possible without him.
