Roeker vs. Mayor DeBlasio

Our wedding was in July and the AC at the synagogue had stopped working so we had to have the doors open with large fans blowing in the relatively cool air. At least it was in the morning! Some ceremonies go pretty long (though not usually as long as Catholic ones).

Yeah... the Catholic ones have almost a full mass associated with them. BORING!

Despite the fact that my family is entirely catholic, and I went to catholic schools for 12 years, I've been to surprisingly few catholic weddings in my life. In fact, the only one I've been to in the last 30 years I can remember was when I was a groomsman.

I learned quickly there's so much going on during the day of a wedding, that unless you're part of it, no one notices that you only showed up to the reception.

That's right. I was a pretty cool guy.

Actually, I was a bit of a jerk at a couple points during show because I felt I had to counteract the image I was generating playing this role. Not consciously. I had to grow up a bit to realize what I had been doing.

That was junior year. Sophomore year I was the captain of the police in Pirates of Penzance and senior year I was the manager guy in Bye Bye Birdie. ...just not the tough guy roles you'd like people to see you as.

What did you do? Flip the bird to Lazar Wolf at the wedding before stomping on the light bulb?

I was the Duke in Patience and Koko in The Mikado.

At Michigan I was Pepe in West Side Story. In the stage play, Pepe is Bernardo's lieutenant on the Sharks and a featured dancer; he has some lines and a solo line in "American" and one other number. In the movie Pepe was written out, and Chino kind of assumes the tasks of being Bernardo's lieutenant, but in the stage play one of the main reasons Bernardo approves of Chino for his sister Maria is that he's a good kid and the opposite of the gangsta' type.

And I was R.P. McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest at the Performance Network in 1984; it was about the third year of the Performance Network's existence, and really the production that put that place on the map.

Oh - almost forgot - I was the King's servant dude in Amahl and the Night Visitor's at Pioneer High too - I think the name of the role is the Page - the one who catches Amahl's mom trying to snag the gold.

Zubin Mehta's nephew Bejun played Amahl; and Bejun to this day is a renowned counter tenor, or renowned anyway in whatever circles counter tenors achieve renownding.

Nothing that mature or cool, but I mean offstage. I specifically remember poorly handling the situation after a rehearsal scene where Motel finds the courage to stand up to Tevya and declare that he's marrying his daughter and just before I run offstage there's this group of girls watching and you can hear the collective "Awwwww" from onstage (with trailing raising pitch like I'm some damned fluffy kitten.) So as I run offstage and pass them I turn and repeat their "Awwwww" at them but in a stupid, mocking voice. And and I leave, I hear the only one that talks says "He's such an ass." At the time I thought I was playing it cool. Now, I see the error of my ways.

But I wanted to be Tevya, not Motel. Tevya couldn't even grow a beard. He was just the biggest, tallest guy that auditioned.

These productions weren't nearly as good as the ones I imagine Pioneer put on (let alone all the others). Small rural school. Okemos High down the road actually did Pirates of Penzance the same year and groups from each school went and saw each others' performances. We ran into the group that had seen ours and the first comment, not at all trying to be condescending, was "Yeah, I liked it. Your show was really...cute."

Wow... you guys actually did stuff in college. I was in a dance number for Greek Week one year. that's about it. the rest of my extra-curriculars consisted of 100% recreational activities.

I only did plays in highschool. In college I did 1 year of Rugby and 2 of Glee Club.

the Jewish wedding I went to featured some obscure tradition where the parents of the bride and groom sat in seats back-to-back wearing laurels around their heads. Apparently it's not very common; no one there - gentile or jew - had seen it before. have you heard of it?

later on, the father of the groom got pretty hammered, and wrapped a tablecloth around himself like a toga, after hearing my comment that he looked like he stepped out of Mel Brooks' History of the World with the laurels on his head.

Brought to mind - I did the synchronized swim in a tutu to the "Nutcracker" for the DG Anchor Splash. Needless to say we won that year :*)

nope, haven't seen nor heard of that "tradition"...so not sure how much of a tradition it actually is, but hey, I converted so it isn't like I know that much.

sounds like that father was the life of the party! lol

I wonder if some of the MGoBlog admin read this board. There's a Fiddler on the Roof video on the main page right now.

probably. and without crediting us either. bastards.

I remember during the year after the Tressel/Tattoogate scandal, if you googled my ESPN username, the first link to come up was the timeline I created (with links to the documents online) of the events. Evidently a lot of people from a lot of places were reading it and some were linking to it. I never got a message from anyone saying "thanks" though.

while he was at ESPN, Pat Forde mentioned the ESPN-Michigan board once when talking about RichRod, so I know he read it.

I'm sure a lot of less scrupulous sports "analysts"/commentators/talking mouths lift whole ideas from message boards with no attribution whatsoever.

if you look at the user stats on this board, there's normally quite a few more guests viewing things than there are posters logged in.

Glad I didn't have to do anything ghey like that. our routine was fortunately more masculine.

Yeah, like 4 lurkers per poster. I wish there was a way to do lurker polls. I lurked the espn board for a couple years before posting.

currently 27 members logged in, and over 100 guests...

a plurality viewing the Michigan board. the Lions and Tigers boards usually have a lot of viewers as well.
