Saudi Arabia admits Khashoggi died in consulate, fires two senior officials

DUBAI (Reuters) - - Saudi Arabia said on Saturday that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has died, and said it fired two senior officials over the incident that has provoked an international outcry and strained relations between Riyadh and the West.

A statement from the Saudi public prosecutor said a fight broke out between Khashoggi and people who met him in the consulate and led to his death.

“The investigations are still underway and 18 Saudi nationals have been arrested,” the statement on state media said, adding that royal court adviser Saud al-Qahtani and deputy intelligence chief Ahmed Asiri have been fired from their positions.

Khashoggi, a critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, went missing after entering the consulate on Oct. 2 to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage.

Saturday’s comments marked the first time since Khashoggi went missing that the Saudis admitted to his death.

Turkish officials had said they believed he was killed in the building. Saudi Arabia had previously denied the allegations and said Khashoggi had left the building shortly after.

King Salman also ordered the formation of a ministerial committee headed by the crown prince to restructure the general intelligence agency, state media said.

The disappearance of Khashoggi, a U.S. resident and Washington Post columnist, strained relations between Saudi Arabia and Western allies. Arab allies have rallied to Riyadh’s support, but Western pressure has intensified on Saudi Arabia to provide convincing answers.

Before the Saudi announcements, U.S. President Donald Trump said he might consider sanctions against Saudi Arabia over the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, while emphasizing the importance of the U.S.-Saudi relationship.

They say he "Died as a result of a fistfight".

Who the fuck was he fighting? Ivan Drago?

You know the brides father has got to be pissed off, what with all the money he’s already put out for the wedding and so forth.

It’s all about the dollars. Trump will do nothing about this murder for hire authorized by the Saudi Govt.

In his defense, Saudi Arabia was responsible for over 3,000 deaths on 9/11 and we didn't do jack shit about it. To have expectations of retaliation over one journalist is a bit naive.

Although it is a bit funny to notice the tone difference between 44 and 45. If Obama didn't retaliate he'd be labeled a Muslim that puts Muslim countries before America. Trump will be lauded for maintaining a level head or some shit. When in reality there were both too afraid of messing with the oil industry.

We have a plenty of oil here.

yeah I guess you are right sadly.

Pst. Saudis are #1 customer of US military industrial complex.

Please forget about this issue, USA needs to get paid.

Sometimes I forget that the 'Free World' is incorruptible.

Man, there a lot of great arguments for never getting married, but this one pretty much tops ‘em all.

That's what you took from it? Ok then.

Well if not oil, what then? Is it weapons like Polish said? What's the reason why we totally pussed out and spanked Afghanistan instead?

There is very little chance that the Saudi government had anything to do with 9/11.

Osama bin Laden at the time of 911 had been exiled from Saudi Arabia for quite an amount of time.

When the Russians invaded Afghanistan in the early 80s the Mijahadin, the broader regional unofficial multinational Arabic Afghan resistance, which young Osama bin Laden was part of, were our allies against the Russians.

Bin Laden, a Saudi aristocrat, returned home and after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait argued with the Saudi royal family against allowing the United States access to Saudi military bases to fight against Iraq and Saddam Hussein. That is when he was exiled.

There is very little to no evidence to support the idea that the 911 assailants were connected at the time of the assault with the Saudi government.

the US shouldn't be involved in any of these middle eastern countries...let alone doing something about a single foreign journalist that gets killed. I say pull all of our troops out of the middle east and let them kill each other.

Here here.

I don't buy Saudi's explanation for a split second. dalton has the right idea. These middle eastern cultures are not compatible with western civilization period.

I don't buy that for a second.

How would anyone know considering every FOIA request gets denied and any good intel was fed to lawyers representing any Saudis involved?

What about the report of the Saudi bankrolled dry run in 1999? The 28 redacted pages in the congressional inquiry?

How can we hold the Taliban and Afghanistan responsible and not Saudi Arabia? If we weren't going to go after all parties involved, we should have stayed the hell out all together.

Maybe that’s why there’s very little evidence.

Seriously though, Al Qaeda was a rogue underground organization of Saudis who seriously resented the Saudi government allowing the United States setting up military bases in the land of Mecca.

And obviously they hated the United States for doing it.

The reason the Saudi government invited the United States military onto its land was for protection against Saddam Hussein, who had invaded neighboring Kuwait and the Sauds feared Hussein would use Kuwait to launch an attack into Saudi Arabia.

It is counterintuitive to me that the Saudi government would have been behind having its own dissidents perpetrating that kind of attack on its own protector.

Obviously, I could be wrong-all those motherfuckers are crazy, so who knows?

EDIT: I don’t know what the legal status of the Al Qaeda Saudi nationals was with in Saudi Arabia at the time they perpetrated the attack, but again, bin Laden was an outlaw and was living in exile in Afghanistan.

EDIT II I just looked up at the bios of a little more than half of the Saudi attackers, and they had pretty much all been in Afghanistan in the years prior to the attacks, training or fighting against the Northern alliance. Some of them had been in Chechnya prior to going to Afghanistan.

So it appears now that the journalist smuggled the bone saw into the embassy himself, then picked a fight with about 15 Saudi’s who happened to be in the embassy on a special security detail.

During the kerfuffsl, the journalist apparently somehow managed to saw off all of his own limbs, then by vivisected his own torso with the bone saw.

Then he managed to wrap his own individual body parts, then haul them out of the Saudi Embassy in Turkey and dispose of them himself.

Like the famous Russian method of suicide, two gunshots to the back of the head.
