***shaking head in total confusion***

Seriously, tell me what backup QB is going to have a positive effect on the team?

They're basically paying a guy to sit on the bench (based on the last 3 seasons). I'd say the most positive you can get is a guy who will take up as little cap space as possible for never playing. Plus it's not even guaranteed he's the back-up.

I dunno a 4th round guy who might have some tangibles? As XYT has said, if it's just a guy who sits on the bench, will lose anyway if he gets in a game then what's the point? If they decide to draft a QB I can't imagine Dan O. beating out any rookie..or else it was one bad pick.

And just to clarify it's not like I'm splitting my wrists. It just doesn't make sense. If anything it's just a wasted resource to approve a contract.

You guys are insane. You remember one (admittedly) ridiculously bad play the first year the guy saw the field, and ignore the more recent stats he put up as a starter for a team that was 0-11 at the time, leading them to the only wins they would get that year. The guy won't crap his pants if forced to play, and this way we aren't forced to take a QB with one of our picks unless we really like a guy.

Maybe if I post the stats in really large print you will actually notice Dan-O's more recent performances and acknowledge that he is not a complete disaster at QB anymore, and is probably a better option than anyone else willing to come here at the vet min... but no, I see no point trying to communicate anything rational to you guys at this point, and big type would be a lame move anyway.

Carry on with the hate.

And what's stopping them from doing that? Have you had a chat with Mayhew recently?

If he has a 500k cap hit then well 500k. But is it any different between you're concern about why someone wouldn't like it than us not actually liking it? It's a minor almost non-existent move. But it really makes no sense. Unless you have an opinion that he would be okay as a number 2. I don't.

Now if you don't think he's worth a number two, like me, then I don't see why he was signed. Just draft a guy. There doesn't need to be a BU QB competition.

And lastly, it's a message board. I think it was a wasted sign, you don't..and that's okay.

I also wouldn't be okay if Chuck Rogers came back for vet minimum.

You do know the draft is still a month away, right? Maybe signing Dan-O was a contingency plan in case they didn't get to draft the guy they want.

You guys are so quick to jump to conclusions about any situation that's it's actually quite funny.

You know what's quite funny are people who jump on others because they don't like their opinion. Somehow my opinion seems to bother people more than Dan O. bothers me.

I just don't get the apparent overreaction to a guy who should never see the field.

I suppose the Lions won't be drafting a safety either because they signed Ihedigbo?

I just don't like it when people make assumptions about the structure of the team or claim to know what the team plans to do.

I have no idea what they have planned. They could draft no one and I still wouldn't want him on the team..I know you'll ask who else then? My answer, anyone. A young waiver wire guy, anyone.

As far as overreaction, every player we added or didn't sign the forum members give opinions. That was mine..I said it was a bad sign, wasted sign. So..I don't get why you're overreacting to my opinion..

Because I don't get why fans complain about moves that have little impact on the team.

I'm pretty sure that the city of Detroit would implode if Brandon Inge was signed to a minor league contract.

It's not like he was brought here to challenge Stafford. Is that what you guys wanted?

What if Inge was signed to the ML team, the equivalent here? What if we signed any of those other QB you listed, you'd have the sane opinion? Or is it just a nothing deal because he signed cheap?

But I think it's because they have little impact on the team. What's the point. Not sure they could do anything else with 500k but I don't see a benefit. Shouldn't there be some type of benefit with signing guys? Now maybe Caldwell and Mayhew see one. I don't which is why I voiced my opinion. I don't seed why that's difficult to understand.

Not quite. Signing a guy to a major league roster implies that they'll play occasionally when a starter needs a day off or a switch needs to be made during a game. Usually backups in baseball can play other positions if needed too. That's not the case in football, there's no expectation of a backup QB to ever play unless something goes wrong or a blowouts in progress.

All I wanted was a guy capable of filling in in case of emergency while taking up the minimum amount of cap space. Whether they got the best option for that price tag, who knows, I can't imagine there being much of a difference between Dan-O and some other scrub. On the plus side Dan-O and Caldwell are familiar with each other, which might not be the case with other options.

Even with the signing, I'm still in favor of drafting a QB to battle out in TC. Competition should produce the best backup, IMO.

This was a critical signing at exactly the right time. If the Lions had not signed Dan O., he'd have been signed by another NFL team, and where would the Lions be then, huh? Besides, now they can move on to other priorities now that this one is resolved. Now they can focus on which WR they are going to draft in Round one since we all know there are so few of them to choose from this season.

As long as you put it that way..

Off-season workouts begin Monday because the Lions have a new head coach, the timing makes sense.

Hopefully Stafford will make the most of the extra time not only learning the new playbook, but working on his footwork just as much, if not more.

At ~$20 million a year, he better be.

call everyone that hates dan o insane. then try to point to his "recent performances"...which hes has no recent performances. Then say were the irrational ones?

Post Hill's 2013 stats. 2012 he played half a quarter of football. 2011 he didn't play (Dan O did). Show me Hill's recent performances.

If this were any other shitty quarterback there wouldn't be near as much pissing and moaning. We just happened to pick the shitty quarterback that brings back bad memories.

I'm not happy with the Dan O choice but I also don't think it's the worst decision made this off season but judging by this thread you'd think they already benched Stafford in favor of him.
