Socialists/communist stick together

Conan fills up more than the Tonight Show...go figure. (Are the theaters close to the same size?) If I'm ever out that way, I'll have to look you up and see what's cooking. I just reread the chapter in Lasting Lessons about getting hired one more time than you get fired. ...that's all it takes.

The parenthetical question is a good question; the answer is no, Conan tapes in a relatively really small venue on the Warner lot (Chelsea Lately also tapes in a small venue over at Sony, I think) and there's also a certain current novelty to Conan, which, how long is it going to last?

Who knows?

Hence, the response "Well, nobody's asked me to 'yet.'"
.

And when you're out this way...absolutely look me up...Maybe time it when Vic is out here on his job, no?

We'll have some fun.

This is another really, really good one.

Beats the "50 Shades" trilogy, as an emancipation declaration six ways from Sunday, in my humble opinion...

Red, the point of my response is - and I'm not trying to be antagonistic towards tsmith, I'm sure he's a nice guy, and he's a Detroit sports fan and all; that said -

This is a silly thread.

Linking Chavez and Castro to Obama?

Please.

One could much more have easily have linked Chavez and Castro to John Paul II.

That was the point of my response.

Not that I think you needed me explaining to you what the point was.

Although I am percieving that you are a little more literal sometimes, than I might have thought you would be...

Silly?? nah....Some clown posted a thread linking Jenna Jamison to Mitt Romney...now that is silly

aside from the idiotic grammar error in the thread headline, your premise is idiotic (as always) because she actually endorsed Romney; whereas all this stuff about socialism/communism is nothing but baseless conjecture.

also, for the politically challenged, the reason the porn industry's endorsement of Romney would be news & an endorsement of Obama would not is because the Right/GOP panders to the anti-sex/porn Christian hypocrites in groups like Focus on the Family and the American Family Assoc, so for them to not immediately renounce this, and/or accept donations from gay pornographers is an even more blatant example of talking out of both sides of one's mouth than we're used to in American politics.

Here's a little food for thought:

http://atheism.about.com/od/popejohnpaulii/a/capitalism.htm

Political views from the Papacy still go back to John Paul II; the aging current former Nazi Pope doesn't count; he never really says anything, and nobody would give a shit if he did anyway...

dam...the records books need to be changed. They credit Reagan, Thatcher and JP II as bringing down the Soviet empire and freedom to the eastern block countries....

The record book?

Like with sports statistics, and that all?

There are a myriad of opinions as to what down brought down the Soviet Union, and to whaever degree John Paul II did or didn't play a role in that, he inarguably was critical of Western capitalism on many occasions, and certainly had interactions with Heads of State of Socialist countries who allowed religious freedoms to be practiced.

"The first Slavic pope always had an uneasy relationship with the dominant global cultures of Western Europe and North America. He admired their embrace of human rights and democracy, but was shocked by their idolatry of money, their individualism and neglect of the world’s poor, as well as their abandonment of traditional moral taboos. He saw the victory of pluralism in the West as too often a defeat for the truth."

Now - that's right straight from the National Catholic Reporter.

http://www.nationalcatholicreporter.org/update/conclave/jp_obit_main.htm

"Pope John Paul II made an historic visit to Cuba January 21-25. It is the first time a pope has visited the island nation ever and the first time he was welcome since Fidel Castro rose to power in the Communist Revolution of 1959."

That's from American Catholic.

Not sure visting Cuba is endorsing Castro, afterall the country is 99% catholic
As far as the western culture/countries....I can see why he would be uneasy with it

I didn't claim it was endorsing Castro, just that he visited Socialist nations, and interacted with the heads of those state of those nations, obviously.

John Paul II was also critical of socialism, at least the way it operated during the era of his Papacy in socialist nations, but not because of the philosophy of wealth distritution but that rather because the "individual" was marginalized in the Marxist, totalitarian form of socialism that was the predominant during his era.

Possible he disliked it because in the Soviet style of Communism nearly forbade religion. All glory went to the State, and religious services and symbols were banned.

So you had a large portion of Eastern Europe that no longer worshipped or supported the Catholic Church or any Church.

So the Vatican was naturally against anything that was capable of stripping it of it's influence on half a continent.

That's probably a root cause, but he also resisted the Latin American push to marry the economic aspects of Communism with Christianity.

how so? I'm not familiar with that. Truth be told though... Jesus DID sound an awful lot like a communist, or at least a socialist.

some left-wing group posted a graphic on facebook with a picture of Ayn Rand side-by-side with Jesus Christ, and wondered how Republicans & conservative folk can reconcile the two.

a lot of people posted that they were "highly offended" by the post and its implications although they never explained why...

The movement is described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberation_theology

I can't pull up this article, but it's from 1979, TIME, titled Religion: John Paul vs. Liberation Theology. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,920117,00.html

The only thing that offends me these days are people who are easily offended. Jesus was apolitical. Politics was not His bailiwick. "Render unto Caesar's what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." His jurisdiction was "not of this Kingdom." So I smirk when people try to pin him down to a political persuasion. They tried that when he was actually here in the flesh, either to define Him or to try and trick Him. They looked silly in the attempt, as people do today, especially those who don't even think He was who He says He was.

As for Ayn Rand, I would hope that she had some private, internal conversion ala' Rocky Sullivan in Angels With Dirty Faces, even as she claimed that she could simply will away the cancer that ravaged her. And to see her and Jesus in the same picture would not offend Him in the least; she is the sort that He would most want to associate with and convert.
