Link.

No word yet on whether he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, as state police aren't releasing any details, but all signs point to "No."

Why, yes he was a Republican, why do you ask?

"Derrr derrr I shouldn't have to wear a helmet because FREEDOM."

Yeah, thanks. And we all pay for the higher costs of health care, emergency services, and insurance when the paramedics have to scrape your carcass off the highway because your "freedom" trumps all else, I guess. Funny how that always seems to work.

Somehow I think that paramedics will arrive at any cycle-related crash scene. And with the increase in fatalities, well, what care is required then? Does it cost more to "scrape a carcass off the freeway" than it does to transport a critically injured crash survivor to the hospital? Outlaw the use of helmets, I say. It will save $ in the long run. Or outlaw motorcycles. Then no one will die in motorcycle crashes.

I was speaking metaphorically, and didn't think dryly posting statistics would help my post. But a brief google of helmet laws shows data compiled by some safety orgs that helmet use reduces fatalities and the severity of injuries overall.

also, for the record, I am not glib or happy anyone died here. some crank always shows up to pretend to be outraged like that. I think it sucks he died; and I feel bad for his family.

I am just pointing out the irony of the person involved here... and the stupidity of the rationale behind the push to repeal these laws.

Seems to me there should be a motorcycle "outfit" that is required. What's the point of this?

I dunno. I agree he's not smart.

but in regards to a motorcycle apparel law, There is a point of diminishing returns and a cost to police involved in any law. I assume helmet laws fall on the economically efficient side of the curve, and - in the tradition of smart government - that's why the feds agreed with studies on the topic and made helmet laws part of basis for doling out federal transportation dollars to the states. I do not have the full story though... just some familiarity with helmet laws generally.

Sad when anyone dies. Rip...My wife seees to many head injuries when she draws blood at the nursing homes. Maybe a helmet or two could have saved some . You even hear stories where bicyclist who are really experienced can fall and crack thier head on the pavement with no helmet going slow and are never the same. I'm wearing a helmet if I get on a bike ... no motorcycles for me.. be careful everyone who owns one
