Stafford Extension done today

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 20s
Lions and QB Matthew Stafford are on verge on blockbuster extension that could be done as early as today, per team source.

Dave Birkett ‏@davebirkett 42s
Matthew Stafford is expected to sign a three-year contract extension soon, possibly today.

Great deal. Some relief next year and 15 million per on the cash. Still 8.3 million hits each of the next 2 years from the restrucutres but some cap relief is needed.

Extend him through his prime. He'll be 29 after 2017 and can always extend after year 3 or year 4 of this deal into his low 30s if the numbers get too high on the back end.

Included in Matthew Stafford's three-year, $53 million extension is $41.5 million guaranteed. Big guarantee.

A shit ton of money for an average to slightly above average QB. Hopefully he improves. The Lions were screwed with all of those high first round picks prior to the new CBA

It is still less than Romo got and I think Stafford is much better than Romo.

back to back 5000 yards and you get paid...bottomline. You extend him because he's the best we got and nobody else is coming here anyways.

its cap friendly and worth every penny.

You can win with Stafford, he's the poor mans Brett Farve. This frees us up to keep Suh, who is making like 21 mil or so next year.

It's really a great deal. The 2 restructures keep his cap numbers bigger this year(and it doesn't matter because free agency is over) and 2014 it will be lower with a low base salary despite the 8.3 million from the previous restructures counting against the cap this year and next year. But after 2014, those 8.3 million hits go away.

15.3 per year on the new deal is a great deal for Stafford. Especially considering his age. He'll be in his prime. Plus you can extend him again in 2016 or before the 2017 season when the cap number will be the highest.

The only thing that Stafford has over Romo is he is younger and has more upside. Statistically, Romo has been the better QB and it isn't really close. Career 64.7 comp %; never below 90 QB rating with his career average being 95.6. Stafford has had one year above 60% comp % with his career average being 59.8 and his career passer rating is only 82.8.

Stafford has been screwed alot in 2009 as a rookie on a bad team and weapon injuries last year. His completion % dropped trying to go to Scheffler and Thomas/Durham (33 targets).

Lots of drops and incompletions not his fault but Stafford moves the chains and scores just as well as Romo.

Cowboys have had a better run game for Romo as well. Plus Romo has the best safety blanket of all, Jason Witten. Witten always has really good completion %. When Pettigrew was in 70%(2011), Stafford was 63%

Give me a break. Stafford has the best WR in the game. Romo has guys that drop the ball and incompletions that aren't his fault. You are just being a Lions homer.

The best wr in the game that only had 5 tds last year because he had shit receivers on the field with him for most of the season, that couldnt take any attention off of him inside the redzone. Stafford wouldve had a much higher td output out there last year if practice squad bums did not occupy a starting role for a majority of the season. Hope their wrs stay healthy this year

The Stafford supporters boast his 4900 yards but blame the lack of TDs on the WRs. If he was good enough to get the yards he should be able to get them into the endzone.
