Personally, I never saw his play to be so outstanding when playing against UM to think he was worth an R1 pick. R2, sure...but I would rather use the R1 on a WR or CB. Add to that his apparent character issues, I will not be upset if the Lions go with a different LB option in the draft. We do not need a guy who will have off field issues prevent him from being on the field. He could be the best LB in NCAA history, if his off field issues mean he only plays 50% of his potential NFL games, I'd pass.
This draft is lacking a solid R1 LB IMO, which is unfortunate as that is a massive need for the Lions. I would rather they attempt to shore up the LB position in FA. Maybe an R3 LB this year and R1 next year if the talent is there...I just do not see the talent this year. Our biggest issue with LBs is their inability to provide solid pass coverage. I want an LB who is able to cover TEs and RBs and disrupt that damn slants and crossing routes. That requires speed, speed, and more speed at the LB position. In today's NFL, I would draft the biggest Safeties I could get and convert them into LBs. They would be able to blitz faster and provide better pass coverage.
I want the fastest and quickest D in the NFL, at all 3 levels. Have a couple big heavies to put on DL for short run situations, but give me speed and quicks for everything else.
