The New Recruiting Thread

I am trying to not get to excited we all know how good we thought Hoke had recruited OL. And as of now that hasnt really worked.

Yeah, but our coaches are infinitely better now. Drevno is as good as it gets when it comes to coaching the OL.

From Steve Wiltfong of 247:

"Michigan will try and cook up a few more major recruiting wins before National Signing Day. Bredeson was the first win the staff really had to battle for. The other 14 were guys that already favored Michigan or the Wolverines staff evaluated and gave them their first big-time opportunity.

The nation's No. 1 recruit Rashan Gary is a big-time battle the Wolverines could definitely win.

Harbaugh and his staff are also fighing for blue-chippers like five-star linebacker Caleb Kelly, Top100 offensive guard Terrance Davis, Top100 defensive end Xavier Kelly, Top247 defensive end Khalid Kareem, Top100 linebacker Dontavious Jackson, tight end Naseir Upshur, Top247 offensive tackle Devery Hamilton, Devin Bush Jr., Ahmir Mitchell, Brad Hawkins, David Long and Top100 offensive tackle Jean Delance.

From this group, Michigan has already secured a couple of them, just waiting for the right time for it to go public."

"The right time for it to go public"????? Wtf does that mean? It implies the author's knowledge of more commits but i am at a loss as why he wouldn't say anything.

Maybe they are recruits from the south and they have to properly lube up the whiny cunt coaches of the SEC before the announcement?

Another commit from Josh Metellus. A safety and 2* recruit. Man, harbaugh has a huge variety of talent in 2016. A lot of untapped talent.

I'm sorry, I just find it hard to get exited about so many two star prospects. Yes "Harbaugh" and all...but statistically maybe only one of these guys pans out -- even under Harbaugh while at Stanford. That's why great teams might get 1-2 not ranked or two star kids in a class but that's about it. Even if we get 25 kids in this class, I don't like that we've filled 10%+ with 2 star, under the radar, kids. Let alone where we sit now with 25% being 2 star kids. Even if they all get bumped to 3 star status, that's still highly underwhelming when you compare it to what Hoke was able to bring in during his first full recruiting cycle -- let alone what Urban was able to do in 1/2 of a cycle and the years following. I just don't think we'll be able to compete with teams like OSU if we're relying on developing 2 star talent.

With two very small classes prior to this, this class and the next will be the classes that provide us with the bulk of our Roster in the coming years. We need to get some serious 4 and 5 star talent to finish it out or else I'm afraid we just simply won't have the athleticism to really compete nationally. And we really shouldn't have more room for 2 star guys, even more 3 would be slightly disappointing at this point. Let's be honest, there's just a huge difference between a recruit like Jabrill Peppers and Brady Pallante.

I'm not too worried. We've got highly rated players in the spots that matter in Harbaugh's offense. RB should be set for the next 4 or 5 years and the OL signings have been very solid. I think we even had a couple good ones in 2015. The QB position is absolutely set with Gentry and Peters and still having Malzone and Speight. I have a feeling that these 2 and 3 star players are being picked because Harbaugh knows they won't be needed for 2-3 years and he sees the potential for them to be really good (with coaching) by that time.

I would like to see that big 5* DT commit soon, though.

And how did that turn out for Brady Hoke and Rich Rod bringing in top classes?

I am so exhausted about football recruiting. I love watching basketball recruiting because the impact of a 4/5 star is so much more massive than in football. If it's not a top 10 recruit, it doesn't excite me as much anymore. MSU earned their success with below average classes. I'm more interested to see how JH evaluates these kids vs trying to land 900 five-stars.

I think WR is the biggest concern right now and the defensive line. For all the big talent on the O-line, we have very little highly ranked talent on the D-line and didn't pick up anyone in the past few classes. WR is the same way. We have a ton of highly ranked QB's and RB's at this point, but WR seems shockingly low on talent.

This is a poor argument. Michigan shouldn't have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for talent and hope to develop it with good coaching. We should be able, as RR and Hoke did, to bring in the top talent and THEN hope to develop that into elite athletes. Hoke and RR failed to do the second part of that.

He's not scraping the bottom of the barrel. The class is currently sitting in the top 15. 6 of the 16 are 4-stars, another 6 are 3-stars. He's also going to be bringing in several more highly recruited guys when all is said and done (at least according to the recent rumblings).

Relax, let the process play out. Don't get so hung up on the star rankings. We've done it for years as fans, and it's exhausting and not worth it. When JH starts winning, he'll get top classes. Whether or not fans around here want to admit it, the brand needs to be rebuilt a little bit. MSU and OSU have been walking all over M for the better part of a decade.

It's certainly not to the standard we should be hoping to achieve. It's only top 15 because of pure numbers. The average star ranking puts it in the 30's. Brand remaking is fine, but that still doesn't mean we should be taking this many under-the-radar kids. At worst, we should be taking higher-end 3 stars out of necessity (if that's what is has come to). Kids with no other power-5 offers are not acceptable.

I'll disagree with what Harbaugh is doing when you can name a place he wasn't successful.

I'm more or less taking a cautious approach after being too excited about the previous two coaching hires. Let's put it this way, if another perennial power was doing the same thing I'd be laughing at them.

This coaching hire is not even in the same realm as RR and Hoke.

Are you certain they were successful in bringing in top talent? Maybe those kids were not evaluated correctly in high school and weren't deserving of their 4 or 5 star rankings. It might not have had anything to do with the coaching.
