Congratulations to allshouldbleedblue for nailing the Minnesota score last week on the head, 35-13! On to Saturday’s game ….
It’s hard to hate on Northwestern. After all, the school’s academic reputation is second to none and there’s something endearing about all of Chicago's near-Northside loveable losers.
From 1979 to 1982 Northwestern lost 34 consecutive football games, setting a standard for ineptitude that has yet to be matched. As a youngster living in Evanston, Illinois at the time, I can recall the game when Northwestern finally broke the streak and beat the mighty Huskies of Northern Illinois. The Wildcat student body was so excited to end the streak that they stormed the field at Dyche Stadium, tore down the goal posts and marched them right down Sheridan and threw them into Lake Michigan!
Good times.
In 2012, things are a bit different and Northwestern got off to a ferocious start, becoming the first BigTen team to win six games and become Bowl eligible. First stumbling in Happy Valley and then again against the Corn, Northwestern comes to Ann Arbor at 7-2 overall, 3-2 in the BigTen. All-time, Michigan has dominated the series with a record of 53-15-2 (77% WP), including a 30yr streak - spanning from 1965-1995 - where Northwestern didn’t beat Michigan once.
The last time the teams met in Ann Arbor, Northwestern prevailed 21-14 against the inaugural 2008 Rich Rod squad in utterly miserable subfreezing wind chill, rain, sleet and snow at Michigan Stadium. Saturday’s forecast calls for Partly Cloudy skies and highs in the upper-50’s and Vegas likes the Wolverines too.
Michigan is currently an 11-point favorite with an Over/Under of 52.5 total points and the majority of the early money coming in on the Wolverines to cover.
So post your prediction with some supporting analysis if you wish, but keep the barking and woofing for other threads.
