So you don't think that the team that's beaten 4 ranked teams should be ranked ahead of the team that has beat 1? Michigan may be better, but they have the same record and Tennessee has a much better resume. If anything, be mad that your program had the weakest non conference schedule in the country.

The teams that Tenn beat earlier are not even ranked in the top 25 anymore. The ranking of those teams was hype. It is similar to OSU claiming that it had a tougher early season schedule because it played ND. ND lost the following week to Marshall. Hanging with Bama was impressive, but Bama has looked vulnerable all season. Not as impressive a win as it would have been a year ago.
Was psu?s top 10 ranking not hype? They?ve squeaked by a bunch of unranked nobodies and got throttled by the first decent team they played. Tennessee didn?t just hang with Alabama, they beat them. Other than OSU one time, a B1G team hasn?t hung with Alabama for 10+ years.
As tinsel said week 7 rankings don?t matter but there are reasonable arguments for and against the move. The idea that TN leapfrogging uofm this week is unjustifiable or that uofm is being disrespected is just wrong.
I know, right?
Thank you.
Nothing else matters if Michigan doesn?t 1) get revenge against your Spartans 2) win out between that game and the Shoe, 3) finally win again at the Shoe, and 4) win the B1G championship game again. Do that, and nothing Tennessee does or doesn?t do doesn?t matter. Don?t do that, and nothing Tennessee does or doesn?t do also (probably) doesn?t matter.
If both teams win out TN will most likely have beaten another #1 team (GA), a top 20 UK and another top 5 team in the SEC champ game (prob bama or ole miss) while uofm will have beaten top 2 or 3 osu and some crappy B1G west team (probably Il or Purdue). I have no doubt there will be people complaining about the injustice and disrespect if uofm finishes ranked #2 before the playoff.

But aren?t there going to be 130 teams in a D1 playoff in a year or two anyway?

Tennessee beat Bama at home on a last second field goal. Bama was penalized 17 times for 130 yards compared to 6 penalties on Tennessee for 39 yards. Not much of a beating with the home advantage and lopsided penalty calls. PSU beat Purdue in West Lafayette and Auburn in Auburn. Those are not cupcake teams to beat on the road. I don't think that PSU being ranked #10 at this point in the season was hype. Not arguing that the win over Bama wasn't noteworthy, just that it doesn't justify Tennessee jumping Michigan. I think the Coach's Poll has it right.
If this scenario comes to pass, then TN will have earned the #1 ranking and Michgan the #2 ranking. But I am sure you are right that there will be complaining by some about it being unjustified.
take the rankings away and TN's win was not impressive. the outcome was a toss up, neither team played well; Alabama in fact played like a pile of dogshit.
That muffed punt return was one of the dumbest plays I've ever seen a football player make, at any level. Plus they set a school record for penalties I think.
I don't know if we could beat them at the end of the season, but right now I'd wager we would steamroll either
This post is the muffed punt return of arguments on this thread - yeah, take away the rankings to compare the outcome of games that determine the rankings people are arguing about.
Also, I'd take that bet for whatever size you have.
You're trying to argue that Michigan's quality win isn't that quality because PSU was overrated (ignoring the rankings) then saying that you can't ignore the rankings...
If their name wasn't Bama they would not have been ranked #1 after close calls against Texas and Texas A&M. They were very clearly overrated, just like Penn State, and that was evident before Tennessee beat them.
It's doubtful that scenario will come to pass - I don't think either team will win out. TN has to play at GA and uofm has to play at osu. I think GA and OSU will most likely win out although GA does have a fairly tough slate w/ 3 top 25 teams in a row starting w/ TN the first week in November and then the SEC Championship game if they make it.
