Shepherds are tremendous working dogs for some tasks, generally associated with law enforcement and combat, but over the course of the last century, they tend to have been fazed out as guide dogs in favor of labs and guldens due to their more temperamental nature.

Working shepherds respond better to more confident and assertive leaders, such as soldiers and police, and less so to leaders who might be less confident and assertive because of a disability.
