The "What Are You Listening To Now" Thread

eh... solid, but lacks the soul of the JBs... although pretty much everything does. I don't know if anyone could compete with him live.

Soul is one of those unedifying labels. While James Brown may have been the hardest working man in showbiz and world class entertainer. He was certainly not a world class musician. Medeski, Martin and Wood are. I'm not taking anything away from Brown because he was brilliant and paved the way for many entertainers such as Michael Jackson and .... ..... ... Justin Timberlink

But he was no musician. I still like his music a great deal though.

Always listened to James Brown and the Flames. iirc the piano was Bobby Byrd, also original member Johnny Terry. Many of the soul men had excellent musicians with them.
Another favorite of mine was Wilson Pickett. Steve Cropper played for him, as he did for several, along with Shuggy or Johnny Otis.
I saw both of them in the mid to late 1960's. Brown at a free concert in the Commons, and at a large club in Roxbury, which was a tough place to be for me. Wilson Pickett at a New Years Day at the Surf Natasket. Bought many albums of all, too numerous in a large record collection. Moved on to Rock, Jazz, Blues.

Listened to the new Roots...some good moments. The whole concept isn't sinking in, but I'm terrible at picking out lyrics early on without reading them. Will have to give it a couple more spins.

Any suggestions on another Roots album to download?

Yeah, it took me a few listens through before I was able to better understand the story with Redford Stephens.

Sleater-Kinney - The Woods

If you like guitars and can handle some sometimes yelpy female vocals, check this album out. One of the best guitar albums of the last decade, easy.

Some songs to preview, "The Fox", "Entertain", "Let's Call it Love"

God damn, "What's Mine Is Yours" is badass too

Staying on a female guitar kick, Heartless Bastards - The Mountain is a good one too.

New Common leaked. He's my favorite artist period so I'm a little biased, but the album is incredible. No ID and Com together is fire every time.

Always thought his content was awesome but overall he was a bit overrated. Could never rreally get into one of his albums and just go with it.
