Tigers 2024 Spring Training beginning 2 - 14

Riley Greene faced a real, live pitcher today for the first time since last September.
His 2023 season ended with Tommy John surgery.
"I didn't even think about my arm. I feel normal...I wasn't nervous. I wasn't breathing hard. I was just ready to get in the box."
Greene said he's been feeling "normal" for a long time now, although he officially still appears on the injured list. He said all that remains is box-checking.
"I'm going to do everything by the book."

From her article: "So let me get this straight. The Tigers have improved their roster since last year and PECOTA is predicting they will lose 10 more games?"

Have they really improved their roster? I don't see any improvement. I see a very similar roster with a few minor changes. The biggest change they made, they lost the "ace" of the pitching staff.

Infielder Gio Urshela and the Detroit Tigers are in agreement on a one-year, $1.5 million contract. Urshela, 32, should help at third base and can play a variety of positions. And his ability to hit left-handers suited what Detroit has sought this winter.
He can also play SS. He doesn’t walk and isn’t as good at 3B as people like to think but as a depth play at that price...

Another few things about Urshella;
1. 4 teams in 4 years.
2. big drop in barrel % in 2023.
3. Drop in EV in 2023.
4. hard hit % cratered in 2023.
5. 32 now not getting younger.
6. Flashy at 3B but actually only average.

Urshella BA the last 5 years;
2023 .299
2022 .285
2021 .267
2020 .298
2019 .317
21 HR 2019
2 HR 2023
walk rate all over the place..sub 5.3% 3X 41BB in 2022 7.3%..

not much money, but I don't get it. They seem to already have a handful of this type of player under contract. Doesn't make any sense to me.

The Tigers have designated outfielder TJ Hopkins for assignment. He was claimed 48 hours ago from the San Francisco Giants.The move creates a roster spot for newly signed infielder Gio Urshela.
