Tigers having hard time making the money work on Sorianos deal....Cubs say he will likely stay put.....but deal in August is real possibiltie

It's never over till the fat lady sings.

When the deadline comes and goes, and he's still a cub then I'll believe he's not getting dealt to someone.

Same with the Tigers, just because Avila Sr. says no more deals, until the deadline...it's just talk.

The Tigers and Cubs are discussing an Alfonso Soriano deal, David Kaplan of CSN Chicago reported Tuesday. A deal won't happen before the July 31 trading deadline but could happen after Soriano clears waivers in August, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported.
Soriano is hitting as well as he has since 2008, posting a .274/.324/.504 line in 94 games with the Cubs, including 19 home runs and 61 RBI. He could be an improvement over Tigers right fielder Brennan Boesch (.671 OPS) or designated hitter Delmon Young (.695 OPS).
However, money is the issue. Soriano is owed $18 million per season through 2014, and the Cubs would likely have to eat much of that salary to facilitate a deal.

If they'll take Young we should be on this in Aug like stink on a monkey. Any chance they'll take young?

They would take Young in a heartbeat but the sticking point will still be the money side. If they take Young it would mean they would eat less of Soriano's contract.

So besides the money what prospects do a guy like Soriano get?

That all depends on how much money the Cubs eat. The more money they eat the less the Tigers would have to give up. My guess is if the Tigers were willing to eat all of the contract the Cubs would have taken Raburn and no prospects!

If the Tigers would have agreed to take his entire contract, Dombrowski would have been choked out by Ilitch himself.

Were we in on Garza?

5:14pm: Tigers president and GM Dave Dombrowski told reporters, including MLB.com's Jason Beck, that the Tigers didn't discuss Soriano with the Cubs (Twitter link). "Not once. ... We did speak with the Cubs, but we did not speak about Soriano," Dombrowski said.

Who else is there? Besides Garza?

didn't he say he wasn't talking to Fielder either before they signed him ?

Exactly, the #1 quality needed to be an MLB GM is the ability to flat out lie to people while keeping a straight face.

No GM want's anyone to know he was close to a deal but unable to resolve it, or that the other side just backed him into a corner.

Reed Johnson was gone while it was still reported we were in talks with the Cubs, Dave's full of shit the name "Soriano" never came up one time.
