This is more like it.

To clear roster space for the Schoop and Cron signings, 1B Brandon Dixon has been designated for assignment. The 40-man roster is now full.

The Twins claimed Cron from Tampa and paid him $4.8MM last season, but balked at the $7.7MM salary he was projected to earn through arbitration.
Cron ends up getting a raise from the Tigers, though still coming in under his projected arbitration mark.

While Cron and Schoop aren?t superstars, they are exactly the kind of free agent signings that the Tigers figured to be interested in making this offseason. We know the team won?t be ready to contend in 2020, but after winning just
47 games in 2019 they needed to make some additions that will at least make them marginally better.

It?s also possible that the Tigers could flip one or both of these players for prospects at the trade deadline should they have good first halves.
In any case, give credit to the Tigers? front office credit for trying to make the roster more competitive for 2020. It will be interesting to see if any additional moves follow, particularly for the outfield.

Why the Detroit Tigers' latest signings are just what the lineup needed: Plenty of power.

In Cron and Schoop, the Tigers think they know a bit about what they?re getting. Both players are basically known commodities ? though Schoop, a 2017 All-Star, still has some potential ? and fill the Tigers' big needs at the plate and by position.

They came with higher price tags than last year's free-agent additions, but the Tigers are still fishing the shallow end of the free-agent pool. Last offseason's marquee signings ? second baseman Josh Harrison and shortstop Jordy Mercer ? also came with a promise of consistent performance. Instead, the duo spent most of 2019 injured.

Still, true to general manager Al Avila?s word at this year?s winter meetings, the Tigers have spent more money than in winters past:
The signings of Cron, Schoop and catcher Austin Romine came with a $16.3 million price tag this winter.
Harrison, Mercer, right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross and lefty Matt Moore totaled $15.75 million last winter.

The Tigers likely aren't done spending either, with possible bargains on pitching upgrades looming during the holiday season.

Has to be a upgrade from what we had last season. Maybe we can hit a few homers this year.

Jonathan Schoop, C.J. Cron signings fill huge holes on the Tigers? roster.
Both Schoop and Cron should be massive upgrades over their predecessors.

WOULD YOU RATHER?
Totally Tigers

With the holiday season upon us, let?s have some more fun with our newest blog, Would You Rather.

As you will see, the choices aren?t easy ? and that?s the way it?s meant to be. But it is meant to stir up some good discussion.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons ( 4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

The Tigers gave Jeimer Candelario some quality time at first base last year. Would you rather ...

1. Have that continue.

2. Have C.J. Cron take over for one year.

Vote.

The Tigers have signed C. J. Cron, Jonathan Schoop and Austin Romine to 1-year contracts for 2020. Please participate in the following survey so we can determine how they will make a difference.

How will the addition of them compare with the team we saw in 2019?

1. The on-the-field product will be better.

2. The on-the-field product will be the same.

3. The on-the-field product will be worse.

4. Don?t know/not sure.

5. Other.

I do not expect the addition of Cron, Schoop, and Romine will significantly improve the on-the-field play for the Tigers ..but do expect na overall slight improvement because of them.
Beyond them, I fully expect a greater amount of on-the-field improvement will come from returning Tigers who will play better in 2020 than they did in 2019.

Would not surprise me that Miggy, Candy, and Stewart will all hit better than they did last year ..and their improvement will overshadow the combined hitting from Cron, Schoop, and Romine.

I don't see much improvement coming from Miggy. I would guess is he gets a little worse every year from here on out.

As far as Candy & Stewart...they are young and have a lot of room for improvement. If anybody gets better, it will be one of them.

Jeimer had a half a season where he was decent. Past year and a half he blew. On a better team he's be riding the AAA bench.

Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire?s reaction to signing first baseman C.J. Cron and second baseman Jonathan Schoop last month: ?I was really happy, because we took them from Minnesota, who fired me.?
